They'll never drop simulcasts with Breakfast, 1, 6, 10. If anything, they'll increase the hours of simulcast in the future, in order to fill up the "UK opt" hour quota. They'll do anything to fulfill their narrative "we're still delivering more UK news in the new combined channel to our license fee payers".

With all of the simulcasts, UK viewers are going to miss a large part of the new channel's output in the hours that most people in the UK are actually awake.
Going on today's presenter shifts, once Nicky Campbell's phone-in simulcast starts, all we'll get to see on weekdays is:

11am - 12pm: Rotating presenters / Maryam M?
12 - 1pm: Lucy H
1:45 - 3pm: Lucy H
3 - 6pm: Matthew M
7 - 8pm: Yalda H
8 - 10pm: Christian F

And that's it. I agree that UK viewers should just be getting the full global channel, but for political reasons, it just won't happen. But if I was in the Republic of Ireland, where they can watch both the UK and Global BBC News channels, I know which channel I'd be watching...........

Exactly, they used to be very good at opting in during overnights - something they did for almost exactly 25 years (I believe joint overnights began at the end of March 1998).

That said, both channels have had issues with these kinds of things at times. News 24 in its early days was infamous for its frequent faults - I wonder if opts were one of them and that is why they changed the format of Europe Direct (the only launch simulcast) after a few months*. World did also have that patch in the mid-2000s when they altered how ad breaks worked, which led to network opts messing up constantly - but that was a playout/communication issue rather than news production issue.

* Initially, Europe Direct was a live simulcast on both channels - it had a joint opening, then went to separate news bulletins for about ten minutes, before the rest of the hour continued together - with World opting out at ad points. After a few months, World stopped taking it live and took it on edited delay an hour after, no longer with an integrated news bulletin.

Why do all these newsroom locations have a weird framerate?

Yalda has just said “ Around the World and across the UK you’re watching BBC News” leading into an ad break. She’s obviously unaware that she’s not been simulcast in the UK at the moment.

If this is the new schedule then we will get used to it, but it would be nice if they could increase the head count by 1 so we get the 9-12 shift filled with a presenter rather than the phone in. Or just air world feed.

I’ve not had chance to watch any of this because we’ve had a static shot of a plane for the last 45 minutes before News at 6 started - which visually looks great though I can’t bring myself to unmute the tv.

But from what I’ve read here the consensus seems to be ‘shambles’.

What they should have done and can still do… Chris Cook I know you’re here somewhere… kept ‘BBC World News’ mostly as it was. International Bulletin every front half hour with UK news only during the breaks (as they used to do with the Overnights) UK news bulletin every back half hour. Separate studio/presenter for World Business and to cover UK breaking news Opts if needed in front half hour.

World viewers would only have lost the few back half hour bulletins they get during the day and wouldn’t be subjected to trivial irrelevant uk domestic stories. UK viewers would easily be able to determine the difference between UK branded and World branded bulletins. They’re trying to make it more complicated than it needs to be.

PS. I despise this ‘chameleon’ branding with every fiber of my being and the news version is by far the worst execution of it.

…but who cares what I think, today is the first time I’ve watched any BBC News output in about 6 years. Only here for the graphics - i cant listen to it for mental health reasons - too much gloom and doom.

I haven’t seen the channel live as yet, but I’m so disappointed with the attempts, or lack of, to unify and update branding.

If that centralised globe exists for a sting, then it can be adapted as an end board! Understand costs as tight but come on…

I know some of you might be sad that FoA is not returning on the World feed today due to breaking news. But worry no more, I got you covered!

It is with my deepest sympathies to inform you all that... not much has changed. The only thing that's changed is the BBC World News DOG is replaced by BBC News... that's it. Not even the slightest chameleon branding appears on air. The opening line is now "Thanks for joining us on Focus on Africa from BBC News".

Apologies for the blurry SD quality. It's the only live feed I can find. The HD feed I have access to does not air FoA live (The Africa Channel).
