BBC News Pres: Apr 2023 - Present (News Channel/BBC One)

Yeah, everything seems really clunky - normally there's at least some professionalism on air, but at the end of the last hour, they just cut into a package so World could leave - "You're watching BBC News" - with no apology or mention of what was going on, and went straight to UK-stories on the UK opt. And then this hour, they were replaying an interview on Finland, and cut straight into Jens Stoltenberg speaking to live to reporters, with no context and the previous interviewee still talking over the top! It's gut-wrenching to watch.

Edit: To be fair, their coverage of him talking to reporters is way better than anyone else's - multiple, better angles than Sky, for example (who only showed a clip), but I think someone needs to sit back and think about what the viewer is seeing, sometimes.

They're sponsored, so it's an advertising revenue thing. Of course, previously news programming used to finish at xx:51/52 to allow them, but now it doesn't so you're left with a botched opt. Again, one of many issues that should have been sorted out in planning, let alone the piloting stage - ideally you'd either ditch them or have World opt out at the xx:45 break and take a sport bulletin, then the feature, or have both take sport, with World then opting out. The only 'rational' reasons I can think they haven't done this is a) the sponsorship contracts are huge or b) the contracts haven't expired and they'll be dropped when they are.

Only lasted a second or two and was probably a mistake but the strap was much better sized for one line of text.

… if you’re reading this BBC… that’s one mistake you can do again!

Still cant help the feeling this all feels abit remote and detached for us UK viewers who were used to the warmth and humour of the old News Channel

Across the UK sting has been edited, BBC and News have been removed
Can they not drag the globe further right as those Chameleon labels are removed  Undecided

I think one fundamental issue that they have is when the World feed goes elsewhere (ie Hardtalk) and the agenda goes very UK-focused. To a UK viewer, nothing visual has changed - the same presenter carries on, the graphics, music and branding remain the same, but we now have a complete change in focus that isn’t acknowledged. We here know why, but your average viewer must find it confusing how the agenda suddenly flips.

I generally support the idea behind the changes, but they seem to have skipped the stage in the planning where they consider what they need to do to serve both audiences seamlessly.

I’m wondering how many viewers will notice that these UK-focused content become Breakfast VT repeats, instead of those DTL interviews we used to get.

They might don’t know about what the format has been changed but they might start to ask “Did I watch this report a short while ago?” more frequently.

No, it really isn't.

When Sky news switched to a new system (I think in 2015/16) it was very buggy and prone to failure. Sky News ironed it out, and so will the BBC. It's broadcasting providing the news, that is what it is meant to do and it is meeting that objective. Most people will have their needs as a viewer met.

Exactly this. I don't know why they can't label the bulletins that are both World and UK as either "World" or "International" in the bottom right corner, a bit like they do with shows like "The Context".

I actually quite like having a more international outlook to stories on the News Channel. It separates it from the major UK bulletins and provides a greater breadth of coverage when taken as a whole. I don't know why they want to keep it a secret.

Unlikely to happen anytime soon but I would also move the channel back to the News 24 brand to separate it from regular BBC News output and reflect its international, and now properly 24 hour, focus. In fact it's something the original News 24 flag pres would fit well with.

Having caught up with the overnights, I have to say I hope the increased levels of panel discussions are one of those relaunch gimmicks that ends very quickly. Fine, have The Context, but keep it contained and don't start exporting its format to news programming across the schedule.

What I want from BBC News is a simple factual-account, clearly explained, of what has happened around the world and the UK. That's what both BBC News channels did very well for many years - news, business and sport every hour. So why, now both channels have merged - particularly in this day-and-age, are news reports being sidelined in favour of more opinions? Why am I losing out on more stories so that we can hear some pundit's views on what they think has happened? It's not exactly like opinion-based content is in short supply elsewhere.

Given the slots this content seems to appear most in, I assume it's partly an attempt to go after the US market - but even then the success the BBC have had in America is based on the fact they actually deliver world news straight without the many crappy qualities of US news networks.

Just noticed the "Behind the News" filler at 11.20am has removed the chameleon "BBC" at the top & "News" at the bottom to avoid the "News" being partly covered by the now defunct flipper strap.

Not a massive fan of the permanent one line straps now being used. For one, they are present continuously throughout the story being run, they cover up 1/5th of the screen and so much space is being wasted. They could be a lot narrower, black areas above & below the wording currently, the BBC News logo, time & website could all be incorporated into one line. If anything, the strap could be removed once each story starts rather than persisting, I'm not sure what the idea of that is, unless we assume the audience forget what is being discussed.

I just find the overall package of BBC News graphics dull, bland & lifeless right now with no personality whatsoever. These newspaper style Reith font headline graphics are just so depressing.
