I agree, I wouldn’t have done it - but at least it shows that Maryam’s explanation was genuine, and there was no intent there to insult the viewer. I stand by the view that it was unwise, however.

When I first saw the original clip, I was very shocked (and I don’t think of myself as a “sensitive viewer”). It’s just not something you expect to see on the NC in any context and, originally, it did appear as though it was intended for the viewer - in a way that other gaffes in the past clearly haven’t been, so in a sense are more forgivable or explainable as mistakes.

Because the news follow the public. They report on the stories that the public are talking about, and ultimately this one is.

And to an extent I'd get it, but it ends disastrously with that logic i.e. senior BBC presenters being labelled as criminals when they aren't.

And the inequality in cases reported on is concerning. If we're honest, the public and media (who is very much betari's box in this case, were suggesting (and dare I use the word 'hoping') that a lone female was somehow kidnapped and killed, maybe with a sexual motive in the middle of those two events. Much like the other case in the North of England.

Meanwhile, far more than 20 people a day are reported as MISPERs, but they are graded by risk - I used to deal with around 10 a shift that were 'high risk'. 75% of them were male. 12 men a day complete suicide, 3 times that of the number of those identifying as women.

It's a huge can of worms to open and the wrong forum, but the way the BBC panders to public conjecture and opinion, journalism that does not make. Vox pops of 'we all know each other in a city of 150k' and other such bullshit doesn't flesh out or tell this story, it gives airtime to the braindead.

I have never understood why the local team here could not report on it. Surely the reasons of having teams based across the UK is that they are able to report on events on their patch. At a time that the bbc is making huge cuts across news, how can it justify wasting money on paying a reporter to travel to Norfolk, accommodation and other expenses when they have a great team in Norwich. A local team know the area better.

In Canada, where the media sector is essentially bankrupt, that is what's normally done. Local reporters do lives on the news channels and often file packages for the main national newscasts when the regional correspondent isn't available. But it could also be because of geography. The UK is small enough that they can drive easily to other locations whereas that's not possible in Canada.

It backs up her explanation but she was still messing around and you can’t imagine the likes of Sophie and Fiona doing that. I think the clip improves things a bit for her.

But overall no one seems to much care in the world of social media about her professionalism because she is now (predictably) an ‘icon’ and ‘legend’ etc etc.
