Sky News

Just to note. ITV News also broadcast this.

Slightly off-topic but it looks like the ITV Evening News was planning to run Nicola Bulley as their top story. Noticed the subtitles started with a pre-loaded line from that story, before having to update live because they ran with the Biden-Zelenskyy visit as top instead.

What does that say about a channel if it scares fish? Just talk me through that.

I think that might be better posted in the ITV News thread?

Noted that there was an issue with refreshing the image while waiting for the conference to start. Something to do with the split screen perhaps?

The crisism of Sky News and ITV was for them trying to contact the family directly in the last 24 hours since the body was recovered when they had specifically asked for privacy at this time

Overall id say Sky's coverage has been very good although I did feel uncomfortable watching the live walk through on friday morning but it did give us a good idea of the geography of the area. How remote the paths were, How steep the banks were, How close the bench was to the gate etc

Edit 18:24: They have now updated it to say "The statement goes on to criticise Sky News and ITV, saying journalists had contacted the family yesterday when they had asked for privacy"

The walk through with Kay felt very misjudged. Voyeuristic and unnecessarily dramatic, particularly given the widespread criticism of the hoards of amateur detectives, youtubers and TikTok people who travelled to the village.

Perhaps justifiable earlier in investigation to prompt leads, but that moment passed long ago.

Rather like the manufactured outrage over "revealing" the personal issues of the missing woman.  Everybody, every single journalist in the UK knows why they did this and the specific thing the police were doing to protect the wider family. For the same journalists to then go to rent a quote MPs to kick start a "misogyny" storyline was vile

Not some Broadcasters finest momemts

I agree it was rather rich of Sky to be talking about armchair detectives whilst themselves walking the route with endless speculation about what may have happened but I did think it offered a unique perspective of the area which you don't get from an aerial view.

Talking about Tik-Tokers standing by the bench and taking pics etc whilst broadcasting by the bench was rather eye rolling.

Kay Burley broadcasting from the church graveyard this morning did not sit right with me either. Previous locations were ok.

The media seem to be wanting to blame the police for everything these days. I agree with your comment of manufactured outrage over the release of the personal issues. The police can't win no matter what they do. If they stay quiet they are in the wrong and if they release information they are wrong.

Social media has been a disgrace during this case with people stating all sorts of hurtful things as fact and I think its sad that people are immediately suspicious of family members who are going through hell, due to previous cases seeing family as the guilty party in the end.

Given the spokesperson at the news conference went on to accuse Sky News and ITV News of ‘trying to sell more papers’, I do hope someone has double-checked that that’s definitely who they meant.

Theres a big difference between co-operating with a media outlet when there's a missing person you're asking for help to find and asking for privacy once they are found.

Giving consent for one doesn't automatically give consent forever.

With talk of the BBC supposedly having presenters walking around the newsroom and pieces done from the balcony, I have to wonder if there will be any chance Sky will follow suit? They pioneered it in the UK, after all. Sky News Today from 2002-2005 was brilliant.

I think they were making a broader point about media intrusion and specific allegations about Sky and ITV if you read the whole thing:

Quote:It saddens us to think that one day we will have to explain to them that the press & members of the public accused their dad of wrongdoing, misquoted & vilified friends & family. This is absolutely appalling, they have to be held accountable this cannot happen to another family. “We tried last night to take in what we had been told in the day, only to have Sky News and ITV making contact with us directly when we expressly asked for privacy. They again, have taken it upon themselves to run stories about us to sell papers and increase their own profiles.

For clarity, it was Sky’s Inzy Rashid who sent the text to the family last night - he was confident enough to declare he’d made contact in last night’s output.

Inzy has had a chequered record on and off air, what with his lengthy suspension for breaking Covid rules by going to Kay Burley’s 60th birthday party in 2020, and a big internal row he triggered a year ago when he claimed Sky’s initial coverage of the Ukraine war was “too white”. People in the industry also have strong opinions, shall we say, on his journalistic methods and general behaviour.

Yes I see a lot of focus on this in the next few days.
