The Sport Thread - For stuff not worthy of a thread of its own

The Surbiton Trophy which starts tomorrow has had BBC iPlayer coverage the past 3 years but nothing for that yet either, although it has streaming due to it being ATP Challenger/ITF level on their websites.

Apologies for quoting myself but the LTA have put Centre Court from Surbiton on their YouTube channel.
Watching the ATP Challenger streaming ahead of the main draw action has reminded me how unreliable the 5G signal is from Surbiton and perhaps that's one of the reasons the BBC have decided not to show it in its final year.

The LTA finally turned their YouTube stream on at 5-5 in the second set of the first main draw match today. They turned it off before the second match.
Thankfully Abigail Johnson isn't talking to herself as the commentary is being fed to the ATP Challenger website streams.

Kat Downes will present the BBC's coverage of Eastbourne (selected WTA matches that fit in their limited coverage window)
Gigi Salmon presented last year.

Noticed that for Gibraltar v Scotland, Premier had a version of the infamously caption-less UEFA international friendly titles with an “International Friendly” caption added.

Despite it being an Olympic year, the British team is quite a strong one, with many familiar names set to take part (the European Swimming Championships on the other hand has GB sending an almost youth team). Earlier in the week when I checked (let's say this was Tuesday) there was athletics in the schedule on the Red Button channel for next Friday, but that is not there as of today.

If there is no deal in place, it will likely end up on the Eurovision Sport streaming service. Like the rugby, it is good that it will be available for free if the worst case scenario arises, but it will be a bit out of sight out of mind if it is on a sport-specific streaming site, especially considering the sport is desperate for extra interest at the moment.

BBC now have agreed a deal with the EBU and European Athletics for all European Athletics Championships (outdorr, Indoor and Cross Country) until 2027. Good to see that's it's not just a one-off deal.

No linear coverage listed as of yet (not even the Red Button channel) but keeo an eye on the second link to see if that (hopefully) changes.

The host broadcaster for Sweden v Republic of Ireland (Women) doesn’t seem to be using the standard Women’s European Qualifiers graphics, though RTE are using them in their wraparound coverage. Odd centre top positioned scorebar.

All being well, the return game next Tuesday should go out on BBC1 as advertised with it being moved to Poland, although they’ll again be doing the rather silly build-up over two channels, starting at 6.45 on BBC2 then moving 1 after Wales Today finishes.

This set-up, though unnecessarily cluncky, worked quite well. The transition from BBC Two Wales to BBC One occured in the break between the anthems and kick-offs, so was prefectly timed in a way.

On the other hand, the second half started 20 seconds before they rejoined coverage. Presenter Catrin Heledd said "they have started a little early".

I understand why they are in a rush to get off air today (at 9pm from a 7pm kick-off to rejoin network on the hour), but not sure why they were in a rush to get off air on Friday night. With a 7:15 kick-off, they were due off air at 9:15 and then a 15 minute short version of Weatherman Walking airing up to 9:30. In the end the match overran slightly, so they went off air at 9:20 with a different short airing instead (Nigel Slater's Simple Suppers). Not sure why they didn't bother to stay on air until 9:30, an extra five minutes or so really.

Probably more a sign of the times but when BBC Wales had the rights to the mens qualifiers they were usually on BBC2 Wales IIRC. Whilst I agree that where scheduling allows it's worth bumping them up to BBC1 I think generally viewers prefer to avoid a channel change and programmes not to have to rush off air.

Extra 20 Scottish Premiership matches to be shown by Premier Sports from next season to add to their League Cup and Scottish Cup rights

Premier Sports have won the rights to show 20 Scottish Premiership games a season from 2024-25. Wasn't aware there was a second package on top of the already agreed deal with Sky available. If the current deal is anything to go by, the number of TV fixtures that each ground can host is quite restrictive, so one would presume Premier would have to settle for the non Old Firm scraps Sky leave.

There is the usual online complaints about needing multiple subscriptions, but with Premier Sports now having rights to the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup, Scottish League Cup and Scotland men's internationals, it a good value package for Scottish football fans.
