Newsnight

Newsnight starting tonight with live reporting from the heart of the demonstrations in Tbilisi reminiscent of Newsnights of old - took me right back to Berlin and Tiananmen Square in 1989.

Reporter Rayhan Demytrie has been on air for most of the day on BBC News and is doing an amazing job.

Volunteering. It's #GoodForYou!

A reminder, the final edition of true Newsnight is this Friday - a decision that will surely be either regretted or postponed.

You do wonder if this decision will now be postponed until after the election.

Well they said it would be after the election then they did it anyway.

Possible the 10 will be extended for the next few weeks (think it varies from campaign to campaign). I think if that is the case might be wise to push Newsnight back to 10.45pm.

It would make the most sense as hopefully politics will quiet down for a while once we have this election.

They may spilt the difference, in a sense, by keeping the Newsnight cut to a half-hour programme but also extending the Ten (so Newsnight would then air 22:45 until 23:15).

It would save face for BBC bosses and allow Newsnight-style analysis to appear at the end of the Ten.

The reformatting of Newsnight was featured on The Media Show last week with guests Michael Crick, Peter Snow and Kirsty Wark.

www.bbc.co.uk

This was broadcast just before the General Election was announced. Kirsty, who is leaving after the Election, was fairly sanguine about the new format, at least as far as Election coverage is concerned.

On the more centralised approach in BBC News, it was mentioned that a former Today editor refused to allow Newsnight to be mentioned on the programme (I always remember Newsnight couldn't conceal its glee when a Today presenter made a faux pas) and the Today programme team used to lock their offices to prevent The World At One from accessing their materials.

It was also mentioned that the Newsnight will start uploading clips to YouTube again - the last clip was uploaded in 2020.

Victoria Derbyshire has just done a live two way from the Newsnight studio with News at Ten. There are set changes as part of the new format.

The set looks very bright, and the supporting branding looks very fresh

There are now two sofas in the set, quite a nice new looking one and then the dire old one by the window area. What a mess!
