Having heard Jeremy Vine fighting tears earlier while reading out a text, I think it's very telling from some of the presenters struggling to hide their emotions just how loved he was away from the microphone. I'm not usually morbid enough to listen out for a crying presenter, but I don't recall ever hearing so many struggle to hide their grief on air. Hearing both Bobbie and Jeremy apologise for their supposed "lack of professionalism" just makes me want to get in touch and tell them their apologies are wholly unnecessary.

No on air talent would be able to be briefed about the news prior to the announcement as this may mean they inadvertently release the news early.
Other key people may be advised prior, for instance Steve's old producer was brought in to place his music in the system.
I would imagine there was also a contingency arrangement made incase anyone was unable to continue to present.
I will say the half hour that I heard after the news was incredibly well handled, you can tell Steve was a much loved colleague by all and I commend Mike, Sarah and Bobby for their professionalism in such sad news.
Indeed. Poor Bobby was absolutely distraught but managed to finish the travel news, even remarking how Steve would have told her off for getting upset. The show must go on, and it did.

Thanks for highlighting this. Just when you think there couldn't be a fresh spin on this theme, this lovely tribute appears.
Hopefully Vernon's show will be manually edited on Sounds to include the full performance which straddled across noon into JV's show, so is currently cut off on the Sounds version.

It has been uploaded by the concert orchestra here.

The harpist was on the breakfast show this morning playing Steve's theme - just before half 8, 1:55:45 on Sounds. Absolutely beautiful 😔
Also a lovely montage in the last 10 mins (2:48:00).

I haven't seen an outpouring of grief like this since Sir Terry passed away, and I think that speaks volumes as to just how popular and talented Steve Wright was.
A true broadcasting icon. I really don't think there's anything more I can say that hasn't been said already.
Loved the show.

For anyone who didn't hear, Greg James played the 3pm theme and made a tribute to Steve Wright at the start of his show this morning

On a commercial station, Steve would have to work around ad breaks and, on a network, split links.
Back when Steve was on Radio 1, I remember reading a feature in the NME on the station just as the Bannister revolution was underway and being surprised to learn that all the “Talkie Bits” etc with the posse were pre-recorded.
Other presenters like Mark & Lard did quip about it and some may see it as “inauthentic” but it was about consistently delivering the best experience for the listener.
Yes it was quite well known that a lot of the show was recorded. There were a few cases years ago of people seeing him in Oxford Street while his show was still going out on Radio 2. And of course a lot of the interviews were edited very neatly, sometimes too much.
Johnnie Walkers tribute to him yesterday mentioned that he'd be in at 9am for a 2pm show, that's a lot of prep time and a lot of studio time which probably wouldn't be possible in commercial radio at least on a regular basis
