BBC Breakfast

The regular BBC Breakfast lower-thirds are temporarily replaced by these minimalist retro/modern hybrid graphics, when used in anniversary-related content:

And in another curious old-new hybrid, Breakfast's social media details go old-skool:

From 0700 onwards, the show has (appropriately!) been more focused on the day's regular news, although there have been regular mentions of the anniversary...

...and even an appearance by the Green Goddess herself! (They've even set up the OB at Waterloo Station, where Diana Moran originally got bemused commuters working out on the first edition of Breakfast Time.)

That actually doesn’t look half bad. Makes me wonder… what if Breakfast were to re-introduce the sun icon in some form? I know it’s not going to happen, but it might be interesting to see in a modern way.

"Backstage" at BBC Breakfast:

An enduring mystery: whatever happened to the original BBC Breakfast Time sofa?

Mystery solved: most of it ended up in a skip. But in an unexpected twist, former Miss United Kingdom and previous Breakfast Time presenter Debbie Greenwood...

...managed to save a segment of that original sofa, which she still has in her home (!):

Other old faces that popped up today included Debbie Rix (the first BBC Breakfast Time newsreader), and Russell Grant (the programme's former resident astrologer).

A frequent observation by many of these old hands - as well as the current presenters! - is how lovely and squishy and comfy the original sofa was, compared with how horrible and uncomfortable the current sofa is ("it's like a plank!" / "it's like Velcro, it just sticks to you!" / "Do you have a back problem [with the current sofa]?" "Always.")   Big Grin

A salute to Bernie Wingfield - one of BBC Breakfast's 'technical operators' (as described on air), who worked on the original Breakfast Time at BBC Lime Grove), and is still working on the show today.

The return of the Green Goddess (with appropriate on-screen credit)...

...along with weary commuters being roped in to take part:

Special guest weather appearance by Francis Wilson, complete with horrific jumper...

...and retro weather graphics!

And speaking of graphics, a GIF of the recreated BBC Breakfast Time titles can be seen here: ibb.co

That was a surprise who ended up with it:

The BBC had a live feed to mark the celebration.

Naga: "This is weird, isn't it? All of us on the sofa together?"
Jon: "I know... Is that allowed?"
Charlie: "It's like some Doctor Who thing...!"

A glimpse of the cameras, and floor manager Tracy...

...who brings forth Breakfast Time cake:

...and finally, a rather charming little animation to end the show...

...finishing with the Breakfast (Time) endcap.

The whole programme was, in my opinion, a really nice effort by the Breakfast team. Clearly a labour of love by those involved, particularly in creating such faithful graphic recreations (or apt homages/hybrids, where appropriate) that are unlikely to be used again for another ten years, if at all.

It's always nice to celebrate a significant anniversary in TV, and I think they celebrated this one well.

There’s definitely something about that original theme tune, it would definitely get you out of bed and time for breakfast.
