Update: Am told Paul Royall, editor of BBC1's flagship 1pm, 6pm, and 10pm bulletins, is stepping away from his role to oversee the launch of the BBC's merged UK and World news channels. He is covering for Jess Brammar, who is off on mat leave.

This would be because the previous bod brought in to oversee the merger walked a matter of minutes after hanging his coat up in the US office…

Well if it wasn't clear already it now blatantly is that the UK news channel is closing and the new channel will be nothing more than a simulcast of BBC World.

I won't recover ground covered in earlier posts as to why that might be the case and the onscreen implications of it but what is a disgrace here is how the BBC are doing it without the style of consultation we saw for the closure and subsequent reinstatement of BBC Three.  Yes, they usually ignore the responses anyway and go ahead with their plans but even so there is usually at least concessions that can be made, if not entirely compromise.

Now watch (like BBC Three before it) The News Channel come back in about five years time when the merger flops.

Would be lovely but the BBC is also planning to close CBBC, BBC Four, BBC Radio 4 Extra so this time I really doubt that this would happen

I think News76 is living in a fantasy land (or the early 2000s) where the BBC  has a bottomless pit of money to run as many fully resourced, linear TV channels and radio stations as it likes.
Instead it's desperately trying to survive against the backdrop of a hostile government that has threatened to end the license fee, has cut said license fee to the bone, and is in competition with streaming and digital rivals eating away at its audience.

Hopefully the funding situation post-2024 will improve and allow decisions of the last few years to be revisited.
