Still no info on not only who will be the reporter/presenters but who are the chosen ones for the very tricky UK breaking news opt outs?

All well and good for diary stories. He didn’t really answer the question about covering an unplanned, big story like a flood.

I feel like today's edition is worth to record and share here just in case some of you don't have access to iPlayer and can't wait for the overnight and Breakfast repeat:
www.youtube.com
Some points to note from the interview with Paul Royall, Interim Executive News Editor of BBC News Channel:
- The changes are gradually introduced during April and Early May.
- "There is a global feed and there's a UK feed. At some point will be combined, at other times it will be separate" - I like how he's sugar coating it like 80% of the output is separate while "some part" like 20% is combined.
- At 6-11 a.m, UK viewers will see Breakfast and Nicky Campbell's phone-in.
- 1, 6, 10, and also Newsnight will be introduced to the UK feed as well.
- If there's a big UK breaking story, they will opt out on the UK feed. They will also utilize "single story news stream" as well on the live page and iPlayer. They're marketing it as "more choice and more flexibility for viewers as opposed to reduction" for viewers.
- During breaks on the global feed, the UK feed will see "stories from UK nations and regions". I'm not sure how many stories can be fit in a 1 min quarter break during a generic bulletin... I also doubt they will air these stories during the breaks at :26 and :56... Most likely it'll just be weather and minutes of promos.
- Paul says there will be a UK breaking team on standby 24/7, where in reality they're only on standby from 0900-2300 weekdays.
- Samir Ahmed asks if there's a 24/7 UK breaking team, it doesn't save much money then... Paul didn't give a direct answer.

Will they have a presenter ready with a Thermos Flask and packed lunch for when there is unplanned UK Breaking News? If so, it isn't the most efficient way to utilise the newsreaders for the UK opt outs. I'm not sure how effective this is going to be?

Paul Royall on Newswatch was possibly the worst interview he's ever given.
I just can't see this working. H was nervous, bumbled and it really didn't tell us very much.

And, to be honest, most UK Breaking News that is worthy of the opt is plannable to some degree - 'diary' events such as political speeches, court judgements, etc. can all obviously by prepped for, but even things like extreme weather events are reasonably predicted ahead of time. There is some concern about rarer 'out-of-the-blue' events, but even then the time needed to verify the story does give a cushion to get the opt team on standby.

The figure quoted by other sources was that the merger would save roughly £25m on the UK side (around 40% of the current NC budget - though, worth noting, this still doesn't even put BBC News' budget cuts in the top three worst affected channels!).(31-03-2023, 09:37 PM)ALV Wrote: - Paul says there will be a UK breaking team on standby 24/7, where in reality they're only on standby from 0900-2300 weekdays. This is the crux of the matter.
