American News Presentation

Big news out of Cox Media Group: the company is finally standardizing. First to get the new graphics: flagship WSB (albeit still without a new open or weather graphics, but a much needed upgrade for them) and its Jacksonville duopoly (WJAX/WFOX).

And two more of the stations owned by Cox Media Group switched graphics during the midday news.

Also nice to see some of the screenshots I took last night make it over here.

Here's how WFTV/WRDQ and WSOC/WAXN look like...

And today, KIRO, WHIO and WPXI have also switched, the latter now using Guardian (to align it with the rest of the Cox family) and Brian Lee as voiceover (after the retirement of Scott Chapin, which he announced last December; Lee had been working most promos from 11).

Just WFXT remaining as of this post.

Scott Chapin was the voice of the Sunbeam Television stations (WSVN/WHDH) and he lent his voice to other stations during most of the 90s and 2000s. His gravely deep voice became very synonymous with the tabloid format the Sunbeam stations had successfully pioneered. Although he retired from full-time work in 2011, he continued working for the Sunbeam stations and many dedicated clients in a part-time basis.

Fortunately, WHDH has successfully hired a replacement... the equally well-known Jim Cutler.

WFXT has also switched to Cox's new graphics package.

The package is done in-house by Cox Graphics Hub in WSB, according to NewscastStudio.

Hoping this is just a temporary measure given Gray is slowly preparing to launch the new Matt Quinn standardized graphics package which would mix elements of the Meredith standardized graphics, the Atlanta News First pack, and the WOIO designs.
Took us a year, but here we are: KOLD has switched to GrayOne, in full red. WOIO soon?

And the new ABC O&O graphics have arrived to its flagship station, WABC.

The graphics are a HUGE upgrade from the Linear Drift/Rey Rodriguez graphics they used for many years. Dated from the outset and ridden with mistakes (in the open it spelled “News York’s #1 News”). They also had Charlie Van Dyke to do a new voiceover; yes, he is a legend in the voice business and he has been historically one of the most sought-after voice talents in the industry, but, understandably given his age, his baritone voice has already started to show signs of decaying, which are more pronounced here.

NBC's coverage of last night's Iowa Caucuses was hosted by Tom Llamas in what will be the new Telemundo 47 studio. It's the western side of the recently-split studio 3B - WNBC has the other half.

It looked absolutely fantastic - presidential election night-quality, I'd say.

The ABC and CBS coverage is on YouTube too, but nothing really to write home about in presentation terms.

NBC never does rubbish. Their sets and lighting is always going to be top quality. And even though its officially going to be used by Telemundo 47 when they move from New Jersey in a few months, you know NBC had their own lighting design and camera blocking crews in there for months. It will be interesting to see if they annually kick Telemundo 47 out when the network needs it. Im sure they will have a newsroom alternate set. Word is they building a combined NBC 4 and Telemundo 47 newsroom.

Also rumour is they are going to build a combine newsroom at the NBC Tower in Chicago and building a massive new set for NBC 5 in one of unused studio spaces at the Tower. We shall see.

WSVN has now switched to Jim Cutler too:

A quick tidbit: this is not the first time that Chapin had been replaced on the Sunbeam stations; shortly after Chapin announced his first retirement, he was replaced by Paul Turner (of Chris Moyles fame); after he returned to part-time work around 2016, Chapin’s voice also returned to both Sunbeam stations.

Scott Chapin was/is a legend in broadcast. Well deserved retirement. BUT I think for WSVN and WHDH Paul Turner should have been the replacement. Cutler doest really fit IMO. I love that WSVN and WHDH simply does not care what anyone else is doing. They refuse to follow the flat scheme. They have stuck to what works and it hasnt damaged ratings. Its expected because thats what they do. Any every newscast is a full on production. Not a bunch of locked down cameras and repeatative graphics. They throw the whole thing and the kitchen sink every single time. Its not everyones cuppa tea but for sheer production values the amount of "everything" they use, both channels deserve praise.

Staying with ABC, looks like we might be seeing the start of another new station group package... Hearst's WISN Milwaukee gets a flatter opener, but no chnages on the lower thirds yet.
