UEFA Euro 2024

It's a bit of a sticky one for STV, really. They'll get pelters for putting out an 'English' programme for a Scotland match (even though Ally McCoist will no doubt be all over it); but also the same if all the budget allows for is something like they did at Euro 2020.

If they wanted it to look good I'm sure someone like Sunset+Vine would be able to put together a slick show for them - but then why eat into your profits if people are going to watch the match regardless...

Fox Sports in the US have announced that Jules Breach will be their lead host for Euro 2024. Jules of course is a regular face across TNT Sports, as well as hosting Channel 4's England coverage and the ITV EFL highlights. I'm pleased to hear this as she always comes across well in her work (the interview currently trending with a youth coach of Ademola Lookman from Wednesday night a good example of this). Italy legend Girorgio Chiellini will also be with Fox.

To the wider implication, it sounds like Fox's coverage will be without their big names, like John Strong, and them instead priorising the Copa America taking place in the US. Though, with how negative the reviews of Fox's World Cup coverage has been, this may not be the worst thing.

With Wayne Rooney now Plymouth’s manager he will probably only be available for the group and first knockout round - which might cause a headache for the BBC if he was pencilled into being Alan Shearer’s replacement’s on the biggest matches throughout the tournament

I think Wayne will be a potential England manager in the future, maybe even after Southgate. Southgate carries on till 2028 is my dream then Wayne takes over.

Was there any trailers or adverts launched with the FA Cup coverage today?

BBC Scotland have announced their Euros based entertainment programming. Nothing groundbreaking, but plenty of content for the BBC Scotland channel.

Sadly for that, nothing in his managerial history thus far really suggests that becoming a possibility.

Yes, at half time the BBC's promo was shown, it's pinball themed. I've only been able to find a short portrait version of it online, unfortunately:

The full version is on iPlayer:

I feel like we might be in trailer = title sequence territory here. Visually it's great - if a bit taxing for MPEG encoders - but the theme tune feels like it could be punchier.

Thanks!

That's not usually the case with football tournaments for the BBC (example of 2018 World Cup below with the same true of Euro 2020 - the trailers were original animations, but had no relation to the final intros). However, the BBC has done that for the Olympics, occasionally with some minor changes (London 2012 an example below).

PS Thanks for the excuse for the nostalgia trip going through those intros

Fox have unveiled their commentary teams for the Euros and Copa America. As suspected, the main team of John Strong and Stu Holden are covering the Copa America not the Euros. Four well known voices join Fox for the Euros onsite, with Ian Darke, Derek Rae, Jacqui Oatley and Darren Fletcher on commentary alongside co-commentators Landon Donovan, Rob Green, Warren Barton and Owen Hargreaves.

Ian, Derek and Jacqui are regular voices on US tournament coverage (Derek has tweeted saying he has worked on every Euros since 2008 for the US audience for example), but it is a surprise to see TNT Sports' lead voice Darren Fletcher join the American coverage. He will be alongside another TNT voice in Owen Hargreaves, who is already announced as part of the Magenta/RTL coverage in Germany. That also means three of the commentators and the lead presenter (Jules Breach) have been prominent for BT/TNT over the years.

In France, TF1 and M6 were the only ones in line for TV rights for the event. However, their deal only covers half (25) of the matches, including all of the French team matches, 5 matches of round of 16 and all QF and SF matches; M6 airs the grand final exclusively on FTA. However, there was no word of any pay-TV broadcaster, which would broadcast all 51 matches. Although there were rumours Amazon and Canal+ were bidding, and TF1 and M6 looking to extend their contract exceptionally, UEFA was already in advanced stages of negotiation with beIN Sports France, but its own bid and editorial plans were considered inferior by the body, according to BFMTV/RMC Sport.

Finally, just a week before the competition begins, the Qatari broadcaster and UEFA have reached a deal which also allows them broadcasting Euro 2028 in full (with TF1 airing half of them FTA), and announced its special programming for this year's tournament, with few surprises: alongside airing all matches, there is its expected line-up of beIN Bleus, Club EURO and EURO Show, plus its team of announcers and presenters (Marcel Desailly, Sonny Anderson, Daniel Bravo, Omar Da Fonseca, Luis Fernandez, Darren Tulett, Florian Genton, Thomas Thouroude, Vanessa Le Moigne, Claire Arnoux...)

As for TF1, for this year's event is also business as usual: Denis Brogniart leads its pre- and post-match show, with the exact same team of analysts and panellists as in their 2022 World Cup coverage (Nadia Benmokthar, Adil Rami, Rio Mavuba and Marine Marck, who will report across Germany during the event). Thomas Mekhiche will fill in for Grégoire Margotton (who will call France's matches and the top ones alongside Bixente Lizarazu, as TF1's football announcers of record, plus Saber Desfarges as field reporter) and present a special edition of Téléfoot every Sunday during the entirety of the tournament, which will also include a weekly interview with Didier Deschamps. The B-team of announcers is led by Julien Brun and Sabrina Delannoy, who already served such capacity for Euro 2020.

TF1’s news service will also send its sports reporter Christophe Abel to cover the event, and Téléfoot reporter Sébastien Barnaud will produce a documentary on Kylian Mbappé; that documentary will air on Sunday night after the France-Canada match (Sunday will be particularly busy for TF1, with a very short 20h news and European election special being followed by the match). TF1+ will stream all matchs with RT stats, plus exclusive video content, full match summaries and AI-generated summaries called Top Chrono, in which viewers will be allowed to get a 5, 10 or 15-minute summary delivered at their fingertips; fantasy football and live chats will also be offered. The coverage will also employ a theme song: legendary new wave rock band Indochine will drop a new single on June 14, and TF1 will use a specially-comissioned rework of it for its coverage.

For M6, their plans are getting more and more interesting: long a serious analysis show done from one of M6’s news studios, its pre- and post-match show 100% EURO is having a big metamorphosis this year: after Marie Portolano’s defection to France 2, Prime Video Ligue 1 commentator Smaïl Bouabdellah will host a “nouvelle formule” of the debrief programme for this year’s event, which will be more entertainment-led. The changes include a new graphics, a new team of analysts and panelists (Laurie Samama, Alain Boghossian and others), and a move to RTL’s Grand Studio (long used for Les Grosses Têtes), which will allow them to include a live studio audience for the first time, plus comedy skits and segments (led by stand-up comedians Samuel Bambi, Younes Depardieu and Julien Santini), including a parody VAR segment which will be able to interrupt the show’s normal rundown.

Additionally, M6’s current affairs teams (which produce Capital, Zone interdite and Enquête exclusive, among others, under the C. Productions banner) will produce its own Mbappé documentary, and the network’s daily serial Scènes de ménages will feature a guest appearance from Djibril Cissé. All of M6’s matches will also stream on M6+, which will also feature exclusive documentaries, match summaries and its Fan XP live player with RT stats.

Over in Spain, RTVE has announced its coverage will have a unique twist: for the first time, select Euro matches will be called by a female announcer, Alicia Arévalo, alongside its existing team of Juan Carlos Rivero, David Figueira, Paco Grande, Albert Font and Paco Caro. The broadcaster will employ three female commentators, Vero Boquete, Vicky Losada and Miriam Diéguez; the move is part of the broadcaster’s increased reliance to include more female voices on its sports programming, with emphasis on its men’s football coverage. RTVE will be on-site in Berlin; even if the matches will be produced only in HD HDR, the network will produced its studio coverage in UHD and will premier a new OB unit and production cameras. The network is also bringing a special song for the event, Brillos platino, from Spanish singer Almacor, one of the finalists of this year's Benidorm Fest, Spain's ESC national selection. Their coverage, which will involve RTVE airing all 51 matches, was announced in conjunction with that of the Olympics.
