BBC News Pres: Apr 2023 - Jun 2024 (BBC News Channel/BBC One)

Perhaps unsurprisingly the News Channel is taking World News America this evening, instead of the national news.

Formerly 'Charlie Wells' of TV Forum.

Seamless because it’s happening on both UK and world feeds, of course.

Although we have now got bbc.com/news URLs going out on the ticker and the QR code pushback area, which are not usually seen in the UK. The UK time bug is still there though, so it’s not a full copy of the global feed (just possibly that WNA templates don’t alter URLs correctly).

I meant seamless in that they maintained live pictures through the transition and didn’t go to the globe or countdown considering they were switching from UK to US. The lower thirds did disappear through the switch.

Yes, that’s true. I imagine Washington is running through Studio C’s gallery at NBH. Summing up from Rajini did go straight into Sumi in Washington introducing the hour, which was good. Nada Tawfiq outside the court was also there right the way through.

Well done by the BBC.

Have to say I think most of the reaction to the One's set in Salford is very dramatic. It'll look similar to B for the bulk of the programme. Furthermore, that studio has so many different presentation areas, just look at how Sportsday is presented. The sofa will make no different to the programme.

There's also been a lot of negative reaction to the "human interest" stories. If I had to guess, I'd imagine they'll be used after the regions opt back in at 13:45 if it's a fairly light news day. I don't think they'll become a main fixture of the bulletin.

The only thing that's puzzled me about the way the One plan on using this studio is that they're not using the live newsroom as a backdrop. Someone else had commented that it may be due to limited camera angles, but BBC Sport seem to use it without any problems, so I don't think that's the case.

Finally, I realise this is only being done by a select few people, but the abuse towards presenters and other production staff on here is getting extremely out of hand. There's no reason for it, and if *you* simply don't like a certain presenter, it doesn't make *them* inexperienced or a 'lightweight'. Rant over.

I guess next week, the question is will be saying sofa, so good???

I'll get me coat...

Superb reporting from Gary O'Donoghue in New York. Can really tell he’s got years of experience. Also a mention for the news channel at the end of the ten tonight, a rarity as they normally just refer to online.

Unusually for this time of night, they've gone back to London for further coverage. Doesn't seem that we'll be seeing Singapore tonight.

I’ll hold my judgement till Monday.

I do think out of all studios, Salford looks the best. It’s still got the curved lines, the towers look good and the big backdrop screen looks good. It’s a shame that they didn’t go for that look with B, C and E. I think E would look great in that style, just replace the backdrop screen with the live window.

It would also have scaled well for the regions and would have given the regions some character and not just the square box look.

My only issue with it is the fact that only 11 years ago £1bn was spent on NBH to bring all bbc news together under one roof. The huge price tag was justified by the bbc that bring all of the different parts of bbc news together would save money, there would be more collaboration. Whilst never announced publicly, it’s safe to assume studio B wasn’t cheap. But that’s only being used for 2’hours a day. What can be achieved in Salford that couldn’t in London?

We didn’t!

Sumi continued for just over an extra hour from Washington, until shortly after midnight BST, then we got an hour with Rajini from London (a good presenter for this given her previous experience working in the Washington bureau for several years) which presumably gave everyone in Washington a short break. After that, we returned to Washington an hour earlier than usual (1am BST) to Carl Nasman, who I am guessing started a shift which would have been 2-5am an hour early.

So the BBC did quite well in managing to stretch resources out of the presenters they already had, given that they couldn’t have known in advance when the verdict was going to appear. All three worked one extra hour each to cover for Singapore’s missing three hours.

Presumably the decision to axe Newsday was made quite early on, as they must have asked Rajini to stay after The Context.

This is my biggest issue with recent moves at BBC News (and not just Salford, either).

It’s especially galling at a time of cuts now that money is, however you look at it, being wasted because of the fact that the BBC keeps changing its priorities. That makes no sense, and although it can and does happen in all organisations it seems to be almost constant at the BBC.

NBH cost an absolute fortune and was completed very late, yet almost as soon as it opened we saw decisions being made which watered down the justification of “invest now in a high quality building to bring all of BBC News together, and have greater efficiency and collaboration”. The first example was Breakfast, which could easily have come from Studio B in a setup not dissimilar to Victoria Derbyshire, Newsnight or Impact. Yet a last minute decision was made that they would share a studio with North West Tonight.

Now we see a huge upgrade for Studio B (which had been, for a time, mothballed - when the BBC still had two separate news channels; so the idea that Studio B was not strictly required to keep BBC output on air was established). Shortly after, one of the daily programmes that uses the studio is off to Salford. So did we really need a new Studio just for the Six, Ten & LK on Sunday?

Breakfast finally gets a proper studio, over a decade after sharing a regional-standard set, and it looks good - but do we really need a top-notch Salford studio and Studio B in London? A lot of this spreading things around the country creates duplication of resources.

I’m not convinced the cost can be justified.
