The Sport Thread - For stuff not worthy of a thread of its own

The Daily Mail reports that the BBC have not yet secured the rights to the European Atheltics Championships, which start a week today in Rome. Despite it being an Olympic year, the British team is quite a strong one, with many familiar names set to take part (the European Swimming Championships on the other hand has GB sending an almost youth team). Earlier in the week when I checked (let's say this was Tuesday) there was athletics in the schedule on the Red Button channel for next Friday, but that is not there as of today.

If there is no deal in place, it will likely end up on the Eurovision Sport streaming service. Like the rugby, it is good that it will be available for free if the worst case scenario arises, but it will be a bit out of sight out of mind if it is on a sport-specific streaming site, especially considering the sport is desperate for extra interest at the moment.

That means that an England rugby international will not be on linear TV, something that hasn't occured in the professional era. Good that there is a legal way to watch the match in the UK, but an alarming sign for the viability and growth of the sport. in a similar vein, there is still no broadcaster(s) for next year's Champions Cup.

To the summer internationals, I forgot to mention that there is no broadcaster in place yet for Scotland's game across the Americas. Scotland's last trip to North America was live on BBC Scotland, but not sure how viable that would be for them with extra resources required for the Euros. Premier Sports seem to be a magnet for all things Scottish, so they could be another bet, though.

Bit in bold: Obviously they have been on Amazon in recent years, so that wording is not accurate. But the first time it hasn't been on a popular broadcaster/streamer in recent years is probably a more accurate wording.

Katie Shanahan stepping up to front ITV4’s England v France coverage tonight with Laura Woods presumably focusing on her Champions League final duties and Seema Jaswal still curiously absent (though she was apparently doing some world feed work recently for Premier League Productions - according to the Internet Commentators Database, anyway)

Similar setup to last time for BBC Wales’ coverage of Wales v Ukraine - going on air at 7pm for a 7.15 kick off (S4C have highlights at 10pm)

All being well, the return game next Tuesday should go out on BBC1 as advertised with it being moved to Poland, although they’ll again be doing the rather silly build-up over two channels, starting at 6.45 on BBC2 then moving 1 after Wales Today finishes.

Laura Woods has also been off air herself recently, missing the Fury v. Usyk fight for TNT Sports and the FA Cup final for ITV. Becky Ives stepped in on both occasions. Hopefully everything is all well now and she will be healthy enough to front the coverage tomorrow night (she was listed yesterday on the line-up I posted over on the TNT Sports thread).

For what it's worth, the European Athletics was briefly promoted as being on the BBC at the start of the Diamond League last night.

In contrast RTÉ in Ireland have secured rights to the European Athletics Championships and will show extensive live coverage each day of it.

Surely if Eurovision/EBU has rights in the UK it’s very easy for the BBC to access those rights.

You would think. But then we probably had a similar scenario with the World Aquatics Championships earlier in the year when it was on the Eurovision Sport platform (so the EBU had the rights) but the BBC couldn't get a deal to show it.

It makes as little sense to me.

There were some crazy scenes happening on the pitch during the 1st minute of the UEFA Champions League Final at Wembley Stadium.

4 people and a young child were on the pitch with cameras. There were no stewards for a little while.

The UEFA feed did not show the scenes with their cameras. It delayed the match for about a minute or so.

The people with the cameras were subsequently removed from the pitch by the stewards.

The match has returned to normal at Wembley.

There seems to be something wrong with the video feed that's showing the UEFA Champions League Final in Wembley.

A Video Signal Detected slide came up on the screen on RTÉ2 during the match. Some scenes of the match had audio cut out for a time.

I wonder does that error from UEFA itself or with the individual broadcasters?

Did anyone see this error occur from TNT Sports who are showing the game in the UK?
