UEFA Euro 2024

A bit like when OPTUS in Australia had the World Cup and ended up having to let SBS share every match as they just couldn't cope with demand.

From what I'd read though although Magenta TV have all 51 matches that ARD and ZDF had 34, including all German games, and the other 17 would be on RTL.

RTL have 12 matches, leaving 5 exclusive to Magenta. They initially announced 17, but renegotiated to 12. Part of that deal also involved RTL producing Magentas coverage, them sharing the on-screen personality and studio at RTLs HQ in Cologne ... and this obnoxious cornerlogo on RTL during the broadcast:

This was the last game exclusive to Magenta. RTL still got one of the quarter finals, all other matches are being broadcast by ARD and ZDF.

This match was one of five that was exclusive to Magenta TV, with RTL showing 12 games in the end. With there being such a large Turkish diaspora in Germany, and Austria being neighbours, it did overwhelm their platform. I think they did weel to act promptly to put an alternative available, but sadly many missed the first goal after 57 seconds.

I do find it odd that Magenta TV are the main rights holder in Germany as their football offering outside of tournaments is comfortably the third biggest Pay TV portfolio in Germany (behind DAZN and Sky), with them mainly only showing every 3. Liga and Frauen Bundesliga match (all of the Frauen Bundesliga matches are non-exclusive as well, with many 3. Liga games on free TV). They do show plenty of high profile ice hockey and basketball though, which I guess is their main subscriptions driver for 23 of every 24 months.

ARD and ZDF had changed their usual method of splitting matches for the Round of 16. Instead of alternating days, on Sunday and Monday, ARD showed the two 8pm kick-offs and ZDF showed the two 5pm kick-offs, with ZDF showing the Germany game on Saturday night and ARD the Netherlands game today, leaving Switzerland v. Italy on RTL. Both publci broadcasters showed live sport at the same time on Sunday, with football and the national athletics championships on ZDF and the Tour de France on ARD.

That's better then what the UK has got when Sky Sports has been simulcasted on FTA TV, but it doesn't look the nicest, no.

Been away for a few days so catching up on this thread, and apologies for going off-topic, but can't help but comment about Gabby Logan's treatment at ITV in the period following Des Lynam's retirement, which coincided with the arrival of a new Head of Sport in Mark Sharman, who replaced Brian Barwick, who went to work for the FA. Sharman immediately sought to undemine her by hawking her job to all and sundry (especially at the time when she was pregnant with her twins), with one person who they courted, Jeff Stelling, going as far as having his resignation letter written and ready to hand in to his Sky bosses on 7th July 2005; however, the events which took place on that day meant a change of mind and Stelling stayed put with Sky.

But that still didn't stop Sharman and come the announcement of ITV's 2006 World Cup presentation team, it was announced that Steve Rider was parachuted in to become ITV's No.1 presenter for the tournament, therefore hosting the England games and the final, ahead of not just Logan, but Jim Rosenthal, who is no novice in broadcasting. And as was previously mentioned, the final straw for Logan came with her no longer hosting ITV's live Champions League matches, plus being vetoed by ITV to appear on Strictly Come Dancing, but offered her Dancing On Ice instead, but she told ITV where to go regarding that.

In her book which came out a couple of years ago, Logan talked about those years under Sharman, she said that his treatment of her was "to toughen her up. Surprisingly, she bears no ill towards Sharman, but I don't think that he - or any other Head of Sport - would try that stunt today to the likes of Logan, Kelly Cates, Laura Woods, Lynsey Hipgrave et al, as that would not be a good look today.

On another note, Clive Tyldesley's premature departure from ITV after 28 years (in his second spell with the broadcaster) has still got people talking, especially with 2 weeks of the tournament to go, given that Presenters/commentators/pundits tend to leave at the end of a particular cycle, be it the end of the season, the end of a tournament, or the end of the calendar year. What happened with Tyldesley got me thinking back to what happened to Eddie Hemmings, Sky Sports' voice of rugby league (and ironically an ex-local radio press box dweller on Merseyside like Tyldesley); his final commentary for Sky in 2019 was not the Grand Final at the end of the season in October, but Wigan v St Helens on Good Friday (which at the time would have been akin to Martin Tyler's last commentary on Sky being Man United v Liverpool in October). I later learned that Hemmings' contract would have expired before the end of the season, but it wasn't to be renewed, so he followed his fellow amigos Mike "Stevo" Stephenson and Neville Smith (Sky's RL head honcho) into retirement and given that Tyldesley's last commentary for ITV took place on 29th June, I wonder if his contract expired on 30th June?

So the BBC reset the clock for Extra Time whilst ITV continue through to 120 minutes. Think the reset makes more sense, especially as ITV add ET to the clock so it reads as if extra time goes on for two hours.

Three pundits on the BBC yet Lineker seems to be increasingly fulfilling that role too.

This England game will be ongoing as ITV's Euro programme comes on air.

They're now commentating on the penalties without showing them.
