Jeremy Paxman steps down from University Challenge

Not quite the same way as in The Young Ones though Wink

Almost seems strange to think of UC as having been an ITV show, it's quite high brow and very un-ITV... though admitedly there were only 2 channels when it started and Granada wouldn't have produced it for the BBC, so it couldn't have gone anywhere else. May have felt more at home if they'd moved it to Channel 4 when that began, as some ITV shows did.

University Challenge was also spoofed a few times.

As well as The Young Ones, Not The Nine O'Clock News did one as well, which mascaraed as a police intelligence gathering exercise (IIRC Griff Rhys Jones appeared on both sketches as the host)

And then I found this while seeing if the Not The Nine skit I mentioned is on YouTube (it isn't):

There are probably other examples.

Fellow Granada production What the Papers Say moved to C4 when that launched, then briefly back to ITV (tucked away at night time) before heading over to BBC2.

This only really applies to daily quiz shows that are on all the time, but isn't a reason why they don't tend to change their look is so that repeats can be slipped in without it being that obvious?

Can be but of course Pointless has changed one of its hosts, but the repeats still show Osman at the helm (on the daytime episodes anyway). I suppose in due course once they have a few series worth of the later/guest hosts in the can it'll be like Osman was never there. No end of quiz shows that changed hosts and then the original host(s) were never seen again on it for one reason or another.

For a good few years Jeremy Vine and original host Dermot Murnaghan shared the Eggheads job leaving a lot of people thinking it was repeats when a new Dermot series came along.

Although Granada saw itself as very much above the rest of ITV and producing content far superior than what might have been coming out of LWT or Norwich.

I'm surprised this news story wasn't posted here from a few weeks back... Yes - new set and titles will be coming. Looks like Amol will also be reading questions from a screen, rather than cards from the Paxman era.
www.bbc.com

The set has definitely needed a revamp for quite a few years as it's been looking very tired. Just a shame that they're persisting with the same subtle lighting background behind the contestants - I always thought it looked better when they had something bolder behind them...

Amol Rajan's debut will be on July 17th, with Only Connect returning on the same day.
