The MLB has published they will allow them to continue airing RSN games on Bally Sports to ensure continued availability of these matches; however, the MLB Advanced Media contingency plan is still onboard in case Bally decides to stop airing them.

Now into AT&T Sportsnet territory... The Utah Jazz is planning to launch a direct OTT offering when their deal with Warner Bros. Discovery is up, although it plans to sell some linear rights. The Athletic has suggested Altitude Sports and Entertainment (owned by Denver sports mogul Stan Kroenke, which operates out of Denver but covers all ten Rocky Mountain states, including Utah) and Scripps Sports (Scripps operates Fox affiliate KSTU in Salt Lake, as well as the Ion station in that city) as front-runners for the linear rights.

A similar model has been used by the Clippers since last year, when they renegotiated the deal with Bally to allow them to air all non-nationally televised games, under the condition of selling some preseason and lower-profile regular season games to KTLA and airing them on an internal OTT offering, ClipperVision, which also provides alternate feeds featuring Spanish and Korean-language commentary, as well as something called BallerVision, which is a Manningcast style feed featuring commentary from former Clippers players.

Apple's coverage of MLB Friday Night Baseball will be now restricted to TV+ subscribers (after offering a free preview last season). Additionally, the announcing line-up changes have been confirmed: in place of the more casual style of last season, a more conventional presentation will be employed, with Wayne Randazzo (who had already filled in in the booth) joining in a full time basis alongside analyst/color commentator Dontrelle Willis (hired from Fox). Heidi Watney will remain on the sideline post for the East Coast game team. Additionally, the West Coast team has been completely changed, with Apple hiring Alex Faust (from Fox and the Los Angeles Kings) as play-by-play announcer, Ryan Spilborghs (former Rockies player and AT&T Sportsnet analyst) as color commentator, and Tricia Whitaker (from Bally Sports Florida) as sideline reporter.

For the studio shows (produced by MLBAM/MLB Network), Lauren Gardner will be joined by a whole new team, with Siera Santos (from MLB Network) hosting in an alternate basis with Gardner, and Xavier Scruggs, Matt Joyce and Russell Dorsey as new analysts. Additionally, given the implementation of new game play rules, former umpires Brian Gorman and Dale Scott will focus their duties on explaining these new guidelines. Additionally, DIRECTV has signed a deal to distribute the games to businesses and non-residential premises in the US. Live coverage will expand to 60 other countries beyond the games' existing coverage in North America, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Australia, Japan, South Korea and the UK; most wraparound programming will be still restricted to the US and Canada.

The Bally crisis continues... Steve Rosenberg has resigned as President of Diamond Sports Group.

As told over on American News Presentation, NBCUniversal, as part of now aborted plans to lean its portfolio of regional sports networks (they are now putting them over on Peacock), sold its DC regional sports network to local sports mogul Ted Leonsis (through Monumental Sports and Entertainment). As a result, NBC Sports Washington (as it is currently known) didn't make the move to the newly remodeled WRC facility at Nebraska Avenue, and instead is moving to new facilities inside the CapitalOne Arena in downtown Washington D.C., alongside the move of most non-broadcast employees to Monumental's HQ in Bethesda, Maryland.

Yesterday, Axios' Sara Fischer was told Leonsis is investing in relaunching the network from scratch: the network will have a new name and will fully expand into the streaming fold, by launching its own OTT offering; the app will feature integrations "library of exclusive on-demand content (including original programming), betting integrations and subscriber-only perks, like integration with Ticketmaster"; it also plans to add expanded pre-game coverage, alternative play-by-play feeds, and sports betting-related programming. Leonsis is also investing on rebuilding a section of CapitalOne Arena to house "a two-story production facility that includes two full-scale studios, two smaller studios and six control rooms".

Worth noting production and technical are being handled by NEP Studios from New York, Fort Lauderdale, Dallas and DC. Even the set looks quite Apple-style:

The first reviews came in: they are generally favorable. Praise has been given in the sense of many of the selections for studio hosts and match commentators and the high technical and production quality of the live telecasts, but irks with studio shows (including the punditry going overboard in The View style) and some of the match commentary (which tries to imitate the high-energy and extremely euphoric Latin American commentary style popularised in the US by Andrés Cantor, instead of going for the more sober British styling) need to be addressed.

Apple has published an interactive behind-the-scenes press feature with behind-the-scenes imagery of pitch side and production of the March 12 LAFC/Revolution game, both at BMO Stadium in Hollywood and in the NEP studio in New York. There is also a pair of audio excerpts of both the English- and Spanish-language commentary of the game: Max Bretos and Brian Dunseth (in English, with British-style commentary) and Martín Zúñiga and Rodolfo Landeros (in Spanish, with a more conventional Latin American style).

NCAA basketball's March Madness is over for another year, and WBD and CNN pulled all stops (as usual) for its live coverage. It is Jim Nantz's final March Madness season as play-by-play announcer (he will still do NFL duties with Tony Romo) and a new lead director, CBS veteran Mark Grant (replacing retiring Bob Fishman). They are doing an impressive 60 cameras for their joint coverage over at the NRG Stadium in Houston. The most notable absence: the SkyCam, given NRG's center-hung video board, leading to WBD Sports asking CNN (yep, CNN) to borrow one of their drones from their AIR (Aerial Imagery and Reporting) division.

Bally's St. Louis/Midwest feed has lost, according to the regional Business Journal, an estimated 1.9 million subscribers, more than half to them; this is a reflection of the big problems the company is having currently:

And the Texas Rangers are now invoking the MLB contingency plan at a Texas bankruptcy court after Diamond failed to pay:

This is the fifth team Bally might risk to lose, with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Cleveland Guardians, Minnesota Twins and Cincinnati Reds; in this case, however, the Reds own a stake in Bally Sports Ohio and they could take over production internally as soon as possible:

Quote:With the clock running on the grace period started when regional sports network operator Diamond Sports Group skipped a payment on its debt, “the phone has already been ringing off the hook” at Scripps Sports, according to E.W. Scripps CEO Adam Symson.

“I gotta say as we sit here today witnessing the implosion of the RSN business model . . . Scripps Sports has been getting a very warm reception in the marketplace,” Symson said on Scripps’s fourth-quarter earnings call Friday.
(NextTV)

Big first get by Scripps Sports: they bought the Friday night package of games of the WNBA, which will air on Ion Television in an hybrid basis (some games will be nationally telecast, but others will be offered in a regional basis):

Although Scripps won't change the channel's programming scheme of only airing off-network syndicated reruns, the deal might certainly help to boost that network's profile as an alternative to other similar diginets (like Cozi TV, which also has a similar mix of content).

Staying with Bally, the Arizona Family group of stations (KTVK/KPHO Phoenix and KPHE statewide) announced a deal with both Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury to bring free local matches. The two teams previously were affiliated with Bally Sports Arizona instead.
www.azfamily.com

[Update] The games will also be aired on KOLD Tucson's subchannel. Both AF and KOLD are owned by Gray:

But seems like Diamond Sports won't go down without a fight:
Quote:“The Phoenix Suns breached our contract and violated bankruptcy law, and Diamond Sports Group will pursue all remedies against any parties that attempt to exercise control over our property interests while we reorganize. This is an improper effort by the Suns to change their broadcasting partner without permitting Diamond to exercise our contractual rights.”

Another one for Scripps Sports: NHL team Vegas Golden Knights has signed a deal with Scripps to air local games on TV, specifically Ion affiliate KMCC-TV, which would be disaffiliated from the network for that purpose and will be rebranded.
