One step forward, two back for Sky with Sky Live. It relies on customers sticking with Sky Glass which may well be a dud in itself.

Glass may well live on because of Sky Stream powering the sets, but adding a box with a camera to a device that was designed to remove a box seems silly.

We have just moved over to Sky Stream (from Sky Q), and our boxes arrived with Entertainment OS 1.2 on them on Monday. Not sure what has been updated from the previous version as it's all new to me at the moment!

Interestingly, Sky tried to persuade us to move to Sky Glass instead multiple times over the phone - I suspect it's not doing quite as well as they'd hoped. I presumed this is what had led to them launching Sky Live to try and persuade some more take-up, but to be fair to them they had said during the original launch they would be introducing more hardware in the future.

So far, absolutely love Sky Stream by the way - understand it's not for everyone but it works perfectly for the way I now watch TV.

The addition of pod extenders  for their new modem is a welcome move, especially as the previous ad campaign about the 'WiFi in every room' ad from Autumn 2022 was banned over absent of extenders or boosters for their previous modem router for their guarantee:

This shunning of Sky Q users is making me a bit uncomfortable.

I believe the Q uses a totally non-standard mesh system (not that there was much standardisation back then) and was only ever designed to work properly with the Q router, so that may explain the lack of support for now.

Sky have had challenges getting Q to behave with all sorts of (to them) third party routers and mesh systems (as forum threads elsewhere would attest), and the Q would see this as a third party router even if it has Sky's name slapped on it.

The SkyQ box method of connecting to mini boxes is not simply a WIFI repeater but a mesh wireless system. It works by the main box using its 5GHz WIFI radio to broadcast its own network leaving the 2.4Ghz radio for connection to the user home router. The Sky router would have a secondary hidden 5Ghz SSID that connects to the SkyQ box. its a feature of the hardware and software being able to support multiple SSIDs through Skys customisation of the software. Other providers don't have this SSID broadcasting from their equipment so that why it doesn't work with other providers routers.

Sonos utilises something similar for its speakers.

There is no real benefit for this with SkyQ* which uses the 802.11AC/WIFI5 standard, the new Sky Max hub uses a newer specification of WIFI (WIFI6) and the 5GHz radios get used to deliver the faster speeds (and are not being used solely as backhaul). Typically unless you live in a big house, SKY WIFI MAX is overkill for most people, so don't be a sucker for the marketing. WIFI6 helps regardless due to MU-MIMO and beamforming.

*As with all generations of wireless, maintaining older devices compromises speed. WIFI6 also requires all end devices to support WIFI6 as well to get the full benefit, typically high end devices released in the last 3 years.
