I'm not sure what you think makes the difference between mesh and not mesh, but Sky Q absolutely is a mesh system (although it is not often mentioned publicly) - in an entirely Q setup the TV boxes act as access points, using the same wifi settings as configured on the Sky Q router. Sky also offer "boosters" if the mesh is unreliable, eg in a large house and the boxes can't see each other.

This is why one of the remedies that you often see in those forum threads is where Sky connects one box via ethernet to the router, or installs a booster to do the same. In either case the Q devices can self-organise into their proprietary mesh just as it would if the Q router is used, ignoring the third party wifi network entirely.

You can even enable part of the functionality when using third party equipment - www.sky.com

Whether you have broadband from Sky or not, you can use your Sky Q mini boxes as WiFi hotspots. If you have your broadband from Sky, this is automatically set up.

Wifi 5 vs 6 is irrelevant. There is clearly a need for Sky to be able to support Q with this new router, and the reason why they aren't (yet?) is not because it's a wifi 5 device. The Q routers are dual band too. If I had to guess, they're having problems getting it to behave just as it does with other third party routers.

I think I'd hold off on declaring that people don't need Sky's new mesh system. Every house is different...

I lost some text it seems when I edited, it of course its a mesh system provided by Airties. Yes you can use it as a hotspot but it its basically routing everything through its connection between the Q box and the router where as the Sky router is optimised for that connectivity.

I never said it wasn't supporting Q, some people were making out like Q is being forgotten. I've reworded that bit to better get my point across. Also, most routers are dual band and have been for some time. More recently there has been some implementations that combine the SSID or broadcast separate ones for different bands.

Every house is different, but my experience as a network engineer is that people that think they will get faster speeds by installing lots of repeaters or pods in the space of small house and end up causing more RF interference and making things worse whereas The purpose of a mesh system is to extend coverage. Im not saying don't get it, but most people would benefit from moving their routers from behind furniture and from next to fridges.

They have no choice, debts are pilling high, the industry is changing, they are just a middle man unless they can get their content to same quality as large competitors. The future is not rosy for Sky at all.

If Sky offered the basic Stream pack for £20pm rather than £26/£29pm, I'd take Stream like a shot as the lower price reflects what they offer in that pack. However Q still has smaller channels that haven't take up carriage on Stream.

For now I'm happy with paying NOW £5pm each on a retention rate for Entertainment and Sky Cinema, plus £2 retention rate for HD. You get the better of the Sky linear channels and decent SVoD with it.

To be fair, Murdoch's News Corporation/21CF was only ever the largest shareholder (39%), they never had a majority holding.  Their departure from Sky was perhaps obvious when they were prevented from owning the remaining 61% at the second attempt.
