Channel 5 as one of the legacy PSBs have an obligation to provide news bulletins which they've been gradually shifting to off-peak to get it out of the way. The ITN operation is low budget and has a tiny on-air team, which is why you'll regularly see correspondents cover the main 5pm bulletin. They also provide a short lunchtime bulletin and headlines at 6.55, 7.55 and 8.58pm on weekdays.
A heavy amount of their current affairs hours is covered by the topical discussion shows Jeremy Vine, Storm Huntley and Alexis Conran which are scheduled from mid-morning to lunchtime, also produced by ITN from the same studio as 5 News.

5 News at 5 stopping early as usual pre-Christmas, the last edition on 15th December. Which always seems far too early to go off air to be honest.

Dan's joining Classic FM to present its breakfast show.

He'll also be staying with 5 News.

That seems rather gruelling. I assume he won’t work Fridays on either Classic FM or Channel 5

Not to say radio is less work than TV but compared to BBC Breakfast or 5 News, it's a cushy job on Classic FM,
