The whole thing is farce. Just give us the news on the News channel and leave Campbell on Two.

There isn’t one household in the country that has access only to Two or the News channel, they have access to both. And it is the same on iPlayer.

Any argument that the News channel isn’t providing domestic content can be rebuffed with new domestic news content on the BBC (ala Campbell) and the ‘international’ News channel bulletins having an increased UK focus editorially.

You are also providing increased choice and content for the domestic viewer with a mix of domestic and international coverage across the BBC.

I think this is really a consequence of World no longer having a breakfiller or something like This Week in History to fall back on.

Would anyone know if Nicky Campbell had mentioned the Breaking News surrounding a further arrest at the SNP. Or perhaps a Breaking News strap? Or has it gone ignored all morning?

They had it during the usual mid-hour headlines.

It seems to have been almost completely ignored - apart from brief news and sport headline summaries they have spent the best part of an hour now talking solely about the Just Stop Oil protest at the snooker last night.

The visualised radio show looks better on-screen than I expected, but it doesn’t feel like it works content/format-wise - nearly a full hour on a story that has been relegated to the sidebar on the front page of the BBC News website!

Despite all the well-documented flaws, Talk TV are also doing a much better job of visualised radio - no bulky headphones, normal ‘TV’ microphones and newsreaders with autocue rather than reading a script off a screen. Whilst the 5 Live show doesn’t look bad on TV, it could still look much better.

At around 0954 they interrupted a caller to cross over to Scotland Correspondent Jamie McIvor for more on the breaking news...

Just over an hour later than Sky.

It really can't do what it says on the tin as advertised by the BBC big wigs.

But but but...! There is a website, which completely eliminates the need for a news channel(!) If you don't support these changes you are a Luddite! Nicky Campbell's programme is very compelling! Two plus two equals five! Double plus ungood!

Though Sky are now also showing their business news programme, so that's both news channels (I don't count GBN or Talk TV) showing things other than the SNP news. Shameful.

Still yet to hear an argument against Nicky Campbell's show existing other than 'it's not the NC!'...

I don't think anyone has said there is no place for a news channel, but rather the news channel needs to add more than just reading the website.

With regards to this morning, I'm surprised that News (and 5 Live) both failed to pick up on this sooner. In case anyone forgot (and just assumed it's some thing being forced onto your telly), 5 Live is meant to be the first radio station to break breaking news. It's disappointing that this didn't break on either before the push notification was sent.

If the BBC want public opinion to shift on the channel then they do need to make sure they're doing it right when it matters.

The Nicky Campbell programme has the same issues with the Victoria Derbyshire programme back in the TVF days... being too inflexible for breaking news... Eventually VD was more keen to drop segments for breaking news mentions towards its late days but still you wouldn't get actual coverage till Newsroom Live at 11AM.

A way to improve the Nicky Campbell programme is to extend the length of news bulletins to about 5-6 minutes... utilize the duty UK opt presenter and present the bulletins from the balcony, adopting the format similar to VD - with 1-2 packages for the top stories, and short recorded weather bulletins before handing off back to Nicky. The VD format offered a better balance IMO. The radio format is wayyy too short, and doesn't suit the news channel much...

Here's a recap of Joanna Gosling presenting the VD news bulletin from the balcony with the "sweaty and dirty" look. I miss the old days of TVF members freaking out over VD and the "axe VD!" discussions...
