Good to see that Newsnight has been dropped this evening and the News Channel has gone into full breaking news mode, although as I type this they have just crashed back into Newsnight.

What we've just witnessed, is that the UK opted out of their own UK opt-out, and then opted back in to the original scheduled opt-out.

They should have either:- 1. Dropped Newsnight completely and continued with the breaking news from Buckingham Palace. Having said that, it wasn't really breaking news as it happened at around 7pm 3.5 hours ago. So it would have been difficult for Nicky to fill for another 20 minutes until the top of the hour - unless he had other UK stories to report on, which he hadn't.  OR 2. Started Newsnight from the start after the UK opt-out of the UK opt-out had finished at around 10.40pm. This way, there would have been only one opt-out.

Instead of these preferable options, they crashed into Newsnight half way through an interview.

Rare, but not totally unheard of - some years back, the News channel went through a phase of sometimes taking regional news programmes (either live or later in the evening) during major news events (e.g. floods) and the national bulletins (particularly Reporting Scotland) during major devolved political stories.

Such as? It would help if you could provide examples.

Last time I remember was in 2021, when they took BBC Scotland’s The Campaign.

Then in 2019 they aired BBC London after a terror attack.

Even the smallest BBC foreign news or regional news service does a better job than this. I just don't get it.
