Its easy and cheap to add a US story as opposed to a story in Botswana about drought conditions or elephant poaching or some other country where a reporter has to be dispatched yada yada. IMO the reason US stories are being use is because of the highly developed mass media in the US. Hundreds of local stations across the country. So live pictures are easily available to pop up on the screen in seconds to any broadcaster due to the affiliate news services, like NBC News Channel and FOX News EDGE amongst others. They enables the sharing of footage and live images. So thats why the frequent storm/tornado coverage. Someone on London does a VO over the hundreds of hours of available footage from the affiliate services. Or a building collapse in Philly will have 4 to 5 local affiliates covering for the Philadelphia market, the live helicopter pictures or street side video is readily available and streaming around the world in seconds. But in the grand scheme of things that story has no relevance to anyone except those in the Philadelphia area. Its cheap and easy to fill time with American daily horror stories, such as mass shooting etc.
Australian tv is notorious for these "Breaking News" filler stories.

They've been busy on Friday afternoon and yesterday removing the election desk extension (and associated kit) in NBH-B.

   

I still don't know why they show the feet/chairs of guests. It's such an easily solved issue. ITV News changed their desk after a very short time to hide the chair legs of the presenters by installing a black screen at the side.

Just because the BBC is expanding the staff Washington bureau does not mean that the BBC is pleading to the US.

It’s appalling how some people jump to conclusions that aren’t even true nowadays.

In all honesty, Caitriona will be a great addition to the BBC News bureau in Washington.

As a long time World News viewer, the news agenda has tilted a lot towards the US over time to the detriment of all other parts of the world since the first budget cuts in 2015 because they have to chase ad revenues more than ever before. Overnights from 1am to 5am from DC isn't bad and though I'm not familiar with Caitriona I believe she will do an excellent job. Following the sun for an international news channel is a great idea if it can be done. My complaint as a WN viewer is the disproportionate attention to US domestic stories. If I wanted US news, I could just switch to a US network.
The appeal of BBC WN for me was it was based in the UK but global in POV. This was probably the appeal for long-time American viewers too. The BBC allowed me to see how large and diverse the world really is. The BBC in the past treated the US as a country in the world. A major power in world so it did get a bit more attention even back then but most of the US stories had global or international relevance. But now it's a lot more American local and culture war stories and more time spent on each of them. Newsday should be titled towards Asia but you get a wallop of US-specific news these days. World News Today for European and African primetime was filled with interesting news from all over the world with a bit more on those regions. Now these hours feature a lot of US news.

I always think the BBC News at Ten does a better job covering Africa and Middle East news than World News and the new News Channel.

Africa coverage on the news channel is slightly increased in recent weeks due to the conflict in Sudan but after this news cycle I still hoping they can bring more stories from outside the US.

I would agree that the regional tilts of different strands did diminish after around 2015 - compared to the GMT/Impact/Hub era, when it was fairly normal for the programmes to have different lead stories, the afternoon programmes in particular were very interchangeable content-wise in recent years. And, while I would agree that attention on the US has increased a bit, I'm not sure that it's an exclusively World News issue (compare the coverage US elections get on Network bulletins and Newsnight to the negligible coverage other G7 elections get) and don't think it's solely to do with chasing ad revenue (though that is obviously a consideration the channel have to make).

The thing with the status of US news is that it is unique in the unreciprocated fascination it attracts internationally - ordinary viewers, particularly in certain markets like the UK, do have an odd interest in certain types of American story. Can they sometimes go overboard and should the BBC in particular know better? Absolutely, but I think any skew towards the US (which isn't as big as some make out) is as much to do with interest outside the US as in it, and the BBC don't want to be the only news channel not covering the stories people are talking about.

I missed the junction but the coronation pre-record on the World feed has this white flipper right now... Is this played out from NBH or Red Bee has a new flipper? Usually they go ticker-less nowadays for pre-records (or the gray, more transparent one before the merger)...

Other than WNA, Washington output should use the NBH background loop. When I see the Washington background on general bulletins I just switch off - I want world news not more American news.

The bloke in Washington with the tightly clipped beard is also way OTT. They really need to be careful re the Washington hours not being a total American takeover.

This is all why it would have been better for the audience to give some evening hours to Singapore if London can’t be a 24 hour operation.

Why? We know it comes from Washington. They might as well own that, and show it, rather than trying to hide it. You mean David Willis, right? Personally I think he is all right. His style is a bit of an acquired taste, perhaps, but he is a good presenter and at least he has some personality. I disagree about Singapore. The set up there is not quite as polished as the one in Washington, which is excellent, so they might as well make the most of it - as indeed they are.

Completely agree with you on that. I wish ITV would bring back their skyline backdrops, too. News at Ten has never looked better, before or since.
