BBC News Pres: Apr 2023 - Present (News Channel/BBC One)

Ugh.

The bar immediately above the white headline flipper on the NC has never been great, as it mostly has sod all in it other than a "BBC News" on the left (apart from during the odd few branded strands that have a programme name slug on the right).

But now that it is opaque red, rather than translucent dark grey, it is so much more noticable how mostly-empty it is because the general programme image can no longer be seen through it (and also red draws the eye more than dark grey does).

Programme slugs in strong colours other than red (e.g. Sportsday's yellow slug) look particularly garish when paired with the opaque red bar.

Plus the fact that what *was* the headline flipper at the very bottom of the screen has seldom shown anything other than a static website URL on the left in recent weeks/months, so it also has a big fat chunk of empty space in the middle between the URL and the clock.

It now looks like little more than an ultra-wide version of the Monaco flag along the bottom edge of the screen. 🇲🇨

Currently on The Context we have "BREAKING" in sans-serif, meanwhile "Putin to make 'important statements'" in serif, alternating between each other.

I think it would look better if after "BREAKING" first appeared it was moved next to 'BBC NEWS' in a smaller font size, allowing the headline to remain static. Also a bit of transparency outside of the 14:9 safe area might also look nicer.

On a related note it would be nice if some alternatives to "breaking" were used. For example "Developing" or "Latest" an hour after the news has broken.

Also the ticker either needs improving significantly, so that it works 24/7 and shows more than 3 headlines. For example having it rotate between 3 to global headlines, 3 UK headlines, 2 sport headlines, and website / get in touch details. If something like this was shown all of the time it would improve things, particularly when in UK opt-out focusing on a single story or 5Live.

Poor from the BBC not to have a translator for the speech from Putin tonight. Sky and CNN both have one.

I really don’t like the fact that they are using a red strap for all stories. As others have said it’s hard now to identify what is Breaking News and what isn’t. They should go back to the way it was. I hate the Sports news colour scheme as well. The colours are vile.

It would have been more classier to put the breaking word next to the bbc news logo like they used too, but classy and bbc news coming out of NBH dosent work together except for network news which seems to be in its own bubble now where it still looks good.

Ffs the programme strap the context is on a light red strap on top of the darker red strap you couldn’t make it up, they are having a laugh clearly.

What makes me laugh is how many of those still left in BBC News tweet about how much hard work is going into all of this.

Horrid:

And somehow it looks even worse on the full-height all-red supers:

Also: "Elton John headlines Glastonbury" -- the perfect opportunity for BBC News to once again waste precious time, which could be spent on reporting the actual f**king news, instead talking to three people you've never heard of, and getting their worthless opinions on this day-old non-story.

FFS. 🤬

It’s like the BBC have taken on a load of interns who have been given freedom to do whatever the hell they like with the stuff that was created by actual professionals before they were made redundant.

What an awful state of affairs.
