The BBC Chameleon Thread

If I remember rightly just half a decade ago the Burmese service still had its own little soap and tech segment and broadcast on the radio for an hour twice each day, now it just has one 15-minute bulletin with an immediate repeat to fill 30 minutes...

The branding for all the languages has been BBC NEWS | Language for quite some time now

Sure, but it's still referred to by everyone, the Beeb included, as the 'BBC World Service', not the 'BBC News World Service'. The actual name of the service, and the name presented in the logo, are different. Purely from a branding perspective, that strikes me as a baffling choice.

And if the intention was to fully align the brand with the trend towards news-only content across the World Service, then why is a completely different -- but equally new -- 'BBC World Service' logo (minus the 'NEWS' component) being used to represent the brand on social media?

And to add to the fun, it's branded as 'BBC Radio World Service' if you tune in on BBC Sounds (to which the bbc.co.uk/worldservice URL now redirects):
ibb.co

So that's three different names, and three different logos, for the same BBC service -- all clearly designed recently, in the Chameleon style, and therefore obviously intended to coexist alongside each other.

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but that strikes me as completely batsh!t crazy.

This is going to sound crazy, but if I was in charge of the whole thing, I'd have it so it's called "BBC World Service" everywhere - though I think that's what other people would want as well.

I think when it was still iPlayer Radio it was called BBC World Service there, the BBC Radio bit was only added on the move to Sounds.

It was the same with the old podcasts page - which I'm still upset at the loss of Cry

At school they taught me how to be
So pure in thought and word and deed
They didn't quite succeed...

I think the obvious solution is to have a logo which says BBC World Service, in Reith, but visually similar to the BBC News logo - so white text on a red rectangle. At this point, a red box is synonymous with BBC News (the world over, as BBC World News and now BBC News channel (global feed) - have used such a box for so long).

That way, you create a clear visual link to BBC News, so the viewer forms that unconscious association easily, but just have the actual text of the logo what everyone calls it anyway.

Am I crazy or is that just common sense?

And to be fair, the font used for ‘one’ is still used on The One Show, so it’s totally up-to-date.

Quite apt to use a logo which is supposedly dead.

Rather ridiculous example in the new Nigella Christmas special: the opening caption is still using the Gill Sans logo, but the end caption uses the correct logo!

Bonus points all round to the official Call the Midwife Twitter account for not just using the old BBC One logo, but the one before that
