Rainbow was big hit here but was it shown in the usa or anywhere else?

It was shown in Australia on Channel 7 and New Zealand on (what was then) South Pacific Television.

The US had Sesame Street, which did for them what Rainbow for us. Supposedly. That and still being on the air 52 seasons later. Rainbow folded with Thames of course after 20 years, though it sort of limped on for a while afterwards through two crappy reboots before being put out of its misery.

Sesame Street is actually on topic here because it was a show that we never really "liked" as such, though it did get a considerable amount of airtime on ITV in the 1970s (albeit it off and on in most areas), before they kicked it off to Channel 4 at around the same time the schools programme switched over. Channel 4 stuck with Sesame Street until the turn of the century and then dropped it altogether. I believe it was never aired anywhere relatively high profile (apart from the special Julie Andrews did on an Elstree remake of the US set, the end result of which to cut a long story short effectively lead to The Muppet Show a few years later)
