The Sport Thread - For stuff not worthy of a thread of its own

I’ve never see those titles before! Were they used for just that one game and how did it end up being centrally sold? Were there bespoke graphics that went with it? Interesting the theme was the European Qualifiers theme (an arrangement of Ode to Joy) whereas the current ones use the Euro 2008 theme.

For the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign, hosts Russia were paired with a group with only five teams. This was that Russia would have an organised set of fixtures, and to 'complete' the group as it was the only one with five, not six, teams (Qatar were paired with Republic of Ireland's group for the 2022 campaign in a similar arrangement).

Group H had Gibraltar added after the draw, so these friendlies didn't really materalise, apart from the Belgium one. By the looks of it, this match used the standard European Qualifiers graphics of the time, and the one-off titles had the same music and same sequence of shots as the European Qualifiers intro (PS: I definitely prefer that version of Ode to Joy, though I'm more of a fan of the current graphics).

I see! I do recall the later arrangement with Qatar alright, but in at least the game v the Republic of Ireland, full European Qualifiers branding was used.

Just stumbled onto this news. Channel closure, SportyStuff TV. Never heard of it, but apparently it's existed since 2011.

Outside of the main award that does seem very football heavy.

A rare thing is that I can report positive swimming broadcasting news! The British Championships next week will be broadcast online by the BBC and Channel 4. The evening sessions will be live on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website, with the national diving championships in May also to be broadcast on the BBC. With the swimming championships being an integrated championship with para-swimming, the morning and evening sessions will be live on the Channel 4 streaming platform and the Channel 4 Sport YouTube channel. There will also be coverage on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra.

After the near blackout of the World Championships a few weeks back, this is a positive development. The last national swimming championships I can recall being shown on the BBC was the 2012 event, which even had a highlights show with Hazel Irvine on BBC One on the Saturday, and also doubled as the Olympic test event. Last year's event was on the British Swimming YouTube channel.

PS This article does name Phillip Bernie as the Interim Director of BBC Sport. Maybe the Telegraph was wrong and Babara Slater has left, or she is on gardening leave or similar and leaves at the end of the financial year.

Phillip Bernie has been interim director for a few months.

Odd it's on both - does feel like C4 have given up on most para events outside the Paralympics now.

And it was a poor night for BBC Sport overall as regards event presentation.

Any time I looked at it, it was either greyhound racing or a darts match seemingly in a empty cupboard
