The Sport Thread - For stuff not worthy of a thread of its own

Being reported now that Youtube TV is likely to wrap up a deal for NFL Sunday Ticket in the US, but that any sale of NFL Network is now likely to be separate.

(Just to note YouTube TV is a IPTV service in the US offering linear channels, and distinct from YouTube itself).

Deal done:

Also probably (though not necessarily) the end of the separate Andrew Sicilliano version of Redzone that Directv aired as part of their rights; YouTube TV have the more well known Scott Hanson version.

Viaplay's rugby coverage this evening appears to be using a different studio to what they were using a few weeks ago (which in itself was different to the studio used in the Premier Sports era (originally used by eir Sport)).

I heard some suggestion the middle one is actually in Stockholm, but I’m not sure why’d they’d have gone to the trouble of flying largely U.K./Irish based presenters and analysts out and putting them up overnight.

I suspect the top one may be the old eir Sport studio in Dublin (ie the same studio as the bottom one) with a new set; Premier Ireland haven’t done any studio based programmes (aside from one PL match in early November) since the split with Viaplay. Seemingly studio based programming will return at some point; Premier have been advertising for staff. Keeping that set hasn’t really made sense for some time, there were bits of what are quite clearly the eir telephone cord logo still left, though they removed the eir sport logo from the desk.

Massive issues with Premier Sports in Ireland as the St Stephen’s / Boxing Day football begins - it seems a problem with the encryption settings has meant that satellite customers (both domestic and commercial) cannot see Brentford v Spurs - channel is still working on other platforms including Sky Go and Now.

Edit: fixed basically as I wrote the above. No explanations or apologies to paying customers, of course, from the channel that has no website or social media presence.

Edit 2: Far from the only problem on Premier today, with a commentary problem during Villa v Liverpool followed by a crash to a “Back Soon” slide during Arsenal v West Ham. While the game was in play. They have not done their reputation any favours with the amount of technical glitches suffered on basically their biggest day of the year, when they get the Premier League to themselves instead of being the intermission between bigger games on BT and Sky.

As for the studio, it was world feed coverage on the earlier games but Eoin McDevitt, Neil Lennon, and Kenny Cunningham did appear for the later games and noticeably there were no wide shots of the set.

Having got a better look at it tonight, it’s the set at the top that Premier Sports are in, so that’s almost certainly the old eir Sport studio in Dublin with a new set, with the lack of wide shots to hide that Viaplay logo on the left hand side.

Very very late rights deal for the United Cup in tennis that starts on Thursday at 1am GMT. Around 8pm tonight (Wednesday) a few people on twitter spotted the Australia vs GB tie on BT Sport 1 at 8am on the EPG. Nothing for the other ties yet although the tournament's website suggests official streaming somewhere. www.unitedcup.com

All three courts are on from this evening - the Sydney court is mostly on a main channel (BT Sport 1 or 4), with Perth and Brisbane on the red button.

The half time analysis on Friday Night Football tonight (Liverpool v Leicester) is being done from the press area in the stand at Anfield instead of a studio. Never seen that done before.

Oddly no Soccer Saturday today despite a full programme in the Premier League - presume there’ll be a Soccer Special tomorrow instead with the lower leagues having their games on New Year’s Day.
