The Sport Thread - For stuff not worthy of a thread of its own

Long overdue the final round being broadcast in full.

Former Conservative Culture Secretary John Whittingdale was pressed on the future of the "crown jewels" TV sporting events, and in particular the addition of Welsh rugby games. With the Rugby World Cup and Six Nations upfor tender in the next two years or so, expect to hear more about how FTA rugby should be going forward.

Below the headline here, confirmation from Barbara Slater that there should be a no plane policy for BBC staff travelling to the Paris Olympics next year. Also a mention of the sustainability benefits of using offtube commentary for some events; the balance of using Salford-based commentaries for events that were to be done mainly offa screen during last year's Winter Olympics and European Championships worked quite well I think.

Most notably, there didn't seem to be any highlights reel of the non-televised games until the ITV slot late on Sunday. Not sure whether this is TNT's choice or Prem Rugby wanting to push PRTV.

I wasn't giving it my full attention, but I thought 'The Rugby Review' after Sunday's live game did just that. They also showed some short highlights as part of the build-up.

FA Cup first round TV selections (for the UK) announced. A rare occasion where the minnow is away from home and chosen for TV with Charlton v. Cray Valley. I'd assume the draw will be 5pm-ish after the ITV fixtures on the Sunday.

Channel 4 are also to show some matches, but both the BBC and Channel 5 have also been sounded out as well.

The much maligned Wales v. Barbarians rugby international on November 4th will be live on S4C, per tonight's RWC broadcast.
Not sure if this should have been with Prime (the equivalent fixture four years ago was on Channel 4 like the summer warm up fixtures) and they have handed it to S4C (or a simulcast), or is a seperate contract outside of the summer games.

Also, both of next week's RWC matches will be shown on S4C, when the bronze final is usually shown by S4C only when it features Wales.

The only thing I can say is, I understood the prime contract expired after last year for the autumn internationals, so this may explain S4C showing the game. Any news on an English language broadcaster, or will S4C have that on the red button?

Have S4C only got the one semi final?   Would make more sense for them to have both semis than the bronze match, though if it is sublet through ITV rather than direct with World Rugby perhaps understandable why that isn't the case.   I'm guessing they were locked into the Wales path regardless of whether Wales made the semi-final too.

Only S4C is mentioned below, so presumably English commentary will be offered via the Red Button, S4C Clic and possibly YouTube.

Yep, only the one game from each of the quarter-finals and semi-finals on S4C. I'm not able to find anything to prove it, but I think I saw it mentioned somewhere that S4C's deal is direct with World Rugby rather than ITV. There's no mention of ITV, but a mention of Prime Video who they sublet the warm-up highlights from, in their coverage press release - that's the only clue I can find.

They did announce they'd show Argentina v. whoever in the immediate post-match coverage last Saturday, so I'd agree they were fixed in showing what would have been Wales' match. In 2015, they also showed what should have been Wales' semi-final, though New Zealand v. South Africa was a better pick than Australia v. Argentina.
