Seems to be a short form of the game with 15 minute (900 seconds) one frame games. Presumably to attract a younger audience, so of course they've filled it with players from the 80s.
Snooker 900 is basically the Seniors' version of the WST Snooker Shoot-Out, but with a longer frame time, longer shot clock and a less rowdy crowd, and more of an exhibition. In earlier incarnations of the event, which were on SportyStuff TV, it also included amateur players and was played without any audience.
I honestly preferred this version of the Snooker 900, but it would only generate an audience on TV and in-person because it was the legends of the game. I felt it took ideas from the Shoot-Out and the old Pot Black, to make a relatively interesting afternoon of snooker.
You're correct re Channel 5: this is the first time they've ever shown snooker. Unfortunately, this event was limited to just the UK because the channel isn't available anywhere else, so it suits the kind of audience that would only watch BBC/ITV events [ie Free-to-Air events]. I do hope C5 continues this partnership to show these kind of snooker exhibitions though.
