If it was ITV having the rights and not the BBC it might have been different. Wolves V Coventry is never going to be as watchable as Manchester United V Liverpool. Plus where have TNT subletted rights before which has been good (Champions league final, Europa League Final, Europa League Conference-No) FIFA Club world Cup-NoThey haven’t ‘subletted the scraps of the Olympics’, the BBC has first and second pick of what it can show at any given time, so the content that would have been on broadcast channels is still free for the viewer. I’m not a fan of the deal and don’t think it’s within the spirit of the Crown Jewels rules but it’s not like the BBC are confined to showing the shooting whilst the 100m is on.
All they have subletted is the scraps of the Olympics
As for the FA Cup deal, the FA might have wanted the first picks to all be free to air and that might have been the only way the deal went through, which is almost as good as any deal free to air broadcasters have had in many years apart from for the anomaly of the last few years. That would still be potentially be good deal for Discovery, because they get a shed load of exclusive football and can claim they have every match live on those weekends and make some money back by selling to the BBC or ITV. We just don’t know yet either way.
