This is where not having a multi-billion pound contract with a US broadcaster catches up with them. Sadly the end is nigh - the big sports can do without it but perhaps the minor sports with good participation across the commonwealth will do their own thing, and perhaps could come together in a European Sport Championships style format where they organise events in one city under one banner, but in a manner that seems to avoid the costs of a large scale games.
Indeed one silver lining from a British point of view might be a move towards focusing more on European competition and hopefully eventually the European Sport Championships and European Games can come together to create an event that feels like a true Eurolympics. Indeed IIRC the BBC had the rights to the European Games last year but didn't even really show it - that's how insignificant they are.
