Next up, BFMTV is reportedly looking to poach Matthieu Belliard from franceinfo, among others. Not too sure which slot he could fill. There's a bit of musical chairs that has to happen with Brunet filling the 20/22 weekday slot and unless they pair him up with someone or vacate one of the current evening slots (I don't see him moving over to get a daytime slot?) there doesn't seem to be much space. It's also interesting to speculate who is calling the shots, as Saadé's purchase of BFMTV has yet to go through, with Fogiel still being in charge (he's reportedly going to be out once that goes through). So likely the same editorial line in September this year... maybe some changes will be wanted by the new owner by January or next rentrée?

CNEWS ahead of BFMTV for the first time ever in May. No last minute breaking news story to help out BFMTV unlike what happened last time.

Interesting to see how CNEWS has gone from 3rd to 1st by changing the editorial direction of the channel from news to hard right conservative opinions which hasn't worked so far in the UK with one channel closing and another being propped up by ideological backers.

BFMTV really has a problem with finding that magic presenter who can boost their share during prime time. Laurent Ruquier was never going to be the right choice as he discovered himself when he resigned after low ratings. Hopefully the sale of the channel may help them find the right direction to take it forward.

CNEWS is still not profitable and is also being backed by ideological backers. Whatever their current struggles (2.7% is actually higher than the pre-Covid years), BFMTV is the only profitable news channel and that's been the case for years. There's obviously the prestige of being first but there's an argument to be made that quality journalism is more important than the race to the bottom (BFMTV has been very good at that in a bid to stay ahead of CNEWS lately). Sky over in the UK would be a good comparison, they are a reference despite being quite behind in viewership. A bit like in politics at the moment in the UK, BFMTV would be better off sticking to where it has been: a news channel. It's turned into a very discussion/debate environment ever since they've felt threatened by CNEWS. The only place you can really get a straight news bulletin at most hours nowadays is franceinfo (and even then there has been increasing 'talk' as they call it in French on there).

France 2 and Franceinfo have separate election programmes with France 2 hosted by Laurent Delahousse and Anne Sophie-Lapix, while Matthieu Belliard is in the Franceinfo studio.

It's going to be a really busy summer for the media groups, especially France Télévisions who now have to schedule two election programmes on Sundays on France 2/Franceinfo before the Olympic coverage starts from Paris at the end of July.

Luckily for TF1, Euro 2024 rights are split between them, M6 and beIN Sports, so hopefully there isn't going to be a clash of Sunday evening matches from Germany.
