The Sport Thread - For stuff not worthy of a thread of its own

Netflix is investing on reality sports documentary productions after the success of its F1 series. They have announced a World Cup limited series co-produced by Fulwell 73 and FIFA Films, as well as a Six Nations documentary from Box to Box. Netflix and Box to Box are also launching their new ATP docuseries Break Point (modeled on Drive to Survive) tomorrow, with its golf counterpart Full Swing being announced yesterday and launching next month.

The streamer and the James Gay-Rees and Paul Martin production company are also partnering for a Tour de France docuseries, with the addition of French producers Quad Productions and organisers Amaury Sport and France Télévisions, whilst also confirming the Invictus Games documentary series, Heart of Invictus, from Archewell Productions.

Notice with the snooker Home Nations now the FTA component has gone from afternoon live coverage to highlights at 4am in the morning, though think the final is still live.

It's just come through in the listings. One hour programme at 7pm.
I'd originally been told it would be "extended highlights" at 2pm.
Might as well not even bother... most people will know the result by then.

The BBC gave the women's final 90 mins and the men's 80 mins at lunchtime last year, on BBC One.

Short form tennis highlights rarely work as the cuts often make it obvious how the match will pan out. An hour may be enough for the womens final but the mens probably needs a two hour slot. Also think the semi-finals at least should get a FTA window.

Discovery seem to be far more resistant to working with FTA partners now at a time when Sky and BT have actually been more forthcoming in doing so. Indeed Eurosport itself was built pretty much on being a platform for essentially free to air content that FTA partners perhaps couldn't or wouldn't dedicate time too - I think they somewhat over estimate that tennis fans would subscribe just for a grand slam, though if they could pick up the ATP/WTA rights that Amazon are dropping next year it would be a different matter - although arguably you need to reach that non-subscribing audience early in the year with an event like the Australian Open to get people thinking they want to subscribe for the tennis.

Same situation with how Discovery was trying to offer FTA partners a portion of the Olympic rights in the soon-to-be-concluded 2018-2024 cycle (the IOC/OBS obliged them to sell a portion of coverage to FTA broadcasters per contractual obligations). The most sound case happened in the wake of Pyeongchang 2018; in Germany, ARD and ZDF initially declined to buy the rights due to the broadcasters complaining of prohibitive prices.

However, they reentered talks some months later, eventually agreeing to a reduced deal, which meant ARD/ZDF lost exclusive FTA rights to the Games, with Discovery's TLC airing the most popular events (snowboard, ice hockey, figure skating and short-track speed skating) exclusively. ARD and ZDF eventually got increased FTA rights for Tokyo, Beijing and Paris, as well as allowing them to air three curated streams on their Mediathek offerings.

This was also the same case in Spain. RTVE declined to buy the rights for Pyeongchang, resulting on Discovery's own FTA channels, DMAX and DKISS, airing portions of coverage. RTVE will eventually sublicense the rights in an exclusive way for Tokyo and Paris, whilst airing highlights for the Beijing games, whereas live coverage aired again on DMAX. In Scandinavia, where Discovery has a strong presence, the coverage aired on their general entertainment channels, most of them available only as subscription-based channels, but with universal coverage on operators; in Denmark, however, where anti-siphoning laws are stricter, Discovery had to resell coverage rights to DR, but retained some coverage on Kanal 5.

Not sure how much time has been given to the men's final highlights yet - that day hasn't come through on Digiguide.

It's a no-brainer for Eurosport/Discovery to pick up the WTA/ATP rights, they are already showing much of it in other countries and have a great online platform in Discovery+ so the infrastructure is already there they just need to tick the box that says to make it available here too. But rumours are that Sky want them.

Formula E seems to have new branding and graphics. Can’t say I’m a fan, as I think the previous looks have been amongst the slickest around.

The newly rebranded Viaplay Cup (formerly the Premier Sports Cup (Scottish League Cup)) has also meant the debut for Viaplay's own style graphics in the UK.

I like the idea of the clock but maybe the execution is not fully perfect. Like the animations too.

It's all very slick, but I just can't get my head around the clock being in the middle of the screen. Does the Viaplay bug look like that on air too, or has that been added for social media? it's just a little bit too cluttered.

I did see as well they had a brief message for Darrell Currie, who has been absent from anything live for the last couple of months due to a mysterious chronic pain condition. He's still on Scottish Football Extra on BT Sport (as that's still being presented from home), but I hope we see him again in the studio again soon.
