The Sport Thread - For stuff not worthy of a thread of its own

Jim Nantz does this every year in the build up to Superbowl.

Question would be why he has to do the golf too, and not Bill McAtee or Andrew Catalon who do other events.

Presumably because it’s also the season opener of the PGA Tour on CBS, with earlier events covered by Golf Channel/NBC. My recollection though is that CBS specifically arranged their schedule of PGA Tour events (the rights to which they share with Golf Channel/NBC) so as not to clash with the NFL, and this particular clash has only arisen since the NFL added the extra week to the season, which has made each of the playoff rounds of the NFL a week later than they were in the 17-week era.

The article also reports that ITV have likely ruled out bidding for highlights. And personally I'd doubt anyone else would want to, depite the prestige of the event in the sporting landscape, mainly because any broadcast will have to be shown after midnight.

It will be sad to see, but another milestone on the erasure of golf from FTA TV and the public psyche at large. By my reckoning, and if all other contracts remain the same as last year, only 12 days of regular tournament golf will receive highlights (and all but The Open likely to be only an hour long after Newsnight or later) on FTA TV this year, with no live coverage at all*. The article states that in 2005 the BBC showed 28 days of live golf across the year - quite a rapid decline. Of course there is also the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup in the autumn which are both in Europe and should have primetime highlights.

*Sky does offer a lot of mainly women's golf for free on YouTube with the selected holes or featured groups coverage of The Open last year availble for free on The Open's website.

Not surprised and The Masters only have themselves to blame, especially losing the live coverage of the last two days and the unfriendly hours for highlights.    I doubt the BBC will be putting in any knock out bids for it in the near future but perhaps the BBC pulling away from it's FTA coverage might open the door down the line for it to return fully free to air further down the track.
Golf future is unpredictable- it’s a sport in which nobody knows what the value of the rights in 5-10 years will be because of the breakaway.

Not sure where to put this but the subtitles for the FA Cup on ITV1 are really quick, often appearing before the person has even said the words. Is this normal on sports coverage (or live TV at all)?

What does that say about a channel if it scares fish? Just talk me through that.

* Tommy Bowe is back on the BBC as they have 2 Ireland matches this year
* Reads like Andrew Cotter to commentate on all live matches
* Gabby Logan remains for live matches & Ugo Monye for highlights

Late last week, ITV and S4C also released their press packs for the Six Nations.

ITV:
- Basically the same names as usaul, with Mark Pougatch and Jill Douglas hosting
- Commentary from Nick Mullins and Miles Harrison once again
- Only new pundit name I can see is George Gregan, the former Australia captain. He has been part of ITV's team for RWC 2015 and 2019, but apart from that I can't see why he is neccessarily involved. He has played in France, but I don't believe he's based in Europe these days.

S4C:
- S4C will show every Wales U20 match, with all Wales women matches on linear BBC Wales (all matches on iPlayer for both)
- Sarra Elgan, Catrin Heledd and Lauren Jenkins to present *
- Jonathan Davies to appear in S4C commentary in addition to his appearances on the BBC
- Shane Williams to do likewise on ITV and in the S4C studio

*The Welsh version lists Lauren Jenkins as a reporter (alongside Rhodri Gomer) not a presenter, though likely will she do both across the U20 and men's matches

FA Cup replays on TV confirmed for next week

And Scottish Cup fifth round live TV ties in 10 days time. The Old Firm ties are both back on Viaplay after Celtic had a rare outing on BBC Scotland last round. Darvel shown again as a reward for their massive upset in round four.

The Under 20 Six Nations are predictably really ugly and harsh on the eyes. Hopefully if (big if) we have new graphics on the men's senior competition tomorrow, they are at the very least use a better colour palette.

FA Cup fifth round TV fixtures have been confirmed. Like last year, six matches are on linear TV and two only on BBC iPlayer. Unlike last year, only two days are used to show the fixtures, with no matches on the Thursday evening or the following Monday that was also used last year.

BBC dropped two of the u20s Six Nations matches from the red button schedule earlier in the week to make way for Davis Cup tennis, only to reinstate one of the matches and join the tennis an hour in. Can't help think this could have been on BBC Three for example instead of the red button. Tomorrow the red button joins it 30 minutes in following Final Score. Meanwhile there's a repeat of Flog It! on BBC Two...

That said, the production quality isn't that great from Colombia, so probably for the best. It's a shame BBC Red Button channel isn't in HD on satellite a week earlier.

Usually I would have said they wouldn't put in on BBC Three or BBC Two because sports coverage on those channels usually have presentation to acompony it, but the BJK Cup match on BBC Two in November only used Hazel Irvine presenting from the snooker between matches as any type of presentation so that should be a mute point.

Past Davis Cup ties would have had full presentation, on site for home ties and from a studio for away ties, with Sue Barker, Andrew Castle, John Lloyd etc., and on BBC Two in their entirety.

The time of day probably doesn't help. It might have had a better chance in the morning.

Meanwhile if you want to see how the Dutch do it, Ziggo's coverage of Netherlands vs Slovakia will be freely available on YouTube on Saturday (as is usually the case with Dutch DC and BJKC ties): www.youtube.com
