The Sport Thread - For stuff not worthy of a thread of its own

And they have now changed the DOG.

Ian Harte has appeared as a pundit for the first time on VM2 tonight. He is appearing on the highlights programme between the Republic of Ireland and Latvia.

Not much change for Channel 4's second calendar year covering England Men's football internationals. Jules Breach will again present, Steve Bower will commentate and Kelly Somers will be the reporter. Some change to the pundits involved: Joe Cole remains an ever present but Steven Gerrard and Jill Scott will both be present for the first time in Channel 4's studio. Dion Dublin has said he will be tonight's co-commentator, another debutant.

Graphics wise, it appears that both the UEFA friendlies and European Qualifiers graphics from the last rights cycle look to have remained. No complaints from me, though the original iteration of the Ode to Joy was superior for me.

Of course this is Viaplay's first qualifiers campaign broadcasting in the UK. Last night's Ireland match and today so far has again been world feed only jobs, though presentation looks likely again for Northern Ireland tonight. No matches on BoxNation any more (unlike the Nations League last year), with ViaPlay Xtra (formerly FreeSports) getting three matches aired, including Portugal tonight.

The amount of football across Viaplay this weekend means some of the URC rugby has been demoted to online only (Zebre v Cardiff tomorrow as an example is also on BBC Two Wales). I cannot recall that happening before in the UK, though some matches that were not shown live on eirSport in the previous contract.

This is an interesting listen... Matty Johns, who is a rugby union columnist for Sydney's Daily Telegraph (a Murdoch newspaper), made in his weekly podcast a lengthy interview with David Hill, retelling many of his on-air successes as sports producer, including the launch of Sky's Premier League coverage and Fox's NFL coverage, as well as the Super League war which led to the creation of the current-day Australian NRL, and how it would set a precedent in current-day rugby TV production.

BT have picked up a couple of Argentina's friendlies - v Panama tonight and *checks notes* Curaçao next week. Might be a bit Messi.

Same graphics and intro as previous rights cycle it is. First time the England version of the titles has been used for live coverage I'd presume.

Channel 4.0 are also offering an alternative watchalong.

First time I’ve seen the camera shot for the national anthems done differently with it more zoomed out than the camera lower down what is normally seen for God Save the King.

I'm sure both customers will be relieved.

Or not as he's retired from international football.

That's not true - he's in the squad for these games.

England, just about, win their first ever game live on Channel 4.

Relief for some at Channel 4 after it took seven matches into the current contract to see an England win.
