While ITV is closing their dedicated kids channel, TG4 does the opposite and launched Cúla4! youtu.be
In their own words:
Quote:Karina Feirtéar, channel manager at Cúla4, said: “It’s an historic day for TG4 and the Irish language. The new Cúla4 channel ensures Irish-language content is more accessible for our younger audiences and will hopefully strengthen their engagement with it, as they are the future generation.
“We developed a space for our audience to enjoy entertaining content when they like and will continue to make sure we represent our diverse audience as best we can by showcasing lives in Ireland today, through a fun and colourful experience, while immersing them in a living language, in the hope they learn new things about the world around them through a medium they are used to.”
I have heard from some relatives who live in the Gaeltacht and they say Cula4 is very much loved by kids there, and it attracts a loyal audience, so actually this is public money being well spent on Irish public service broadcasting.
Do S4C still have the rights to a second channel on Freeview (S4C2 was closed many years ago). I could see Cyw (if it's still called that) existing similarly well as a channel in it's own right.
I suspect too like with the English PSBs there might be a desire from TG4 to remove childrens content from the main channel to serve an older audience more likely to be watching their linear content at that time of day.
Is Cula4 in HD or SD?

They may not been able to do that if that is their plan
RTE couldn't get Ministerial permission ( technically he never replied to them and RTE withdraw it ) to do that with RTE2 about 8 years ago .

S4C DO have the right to half a digital multiplex worth of channels in Wales, and being a PSB I wouldn’t have thought it would be too difficult to invite/force Sky and Virgin on-board…
BUT now S4C are more or less funded entirely out of licence fee money, coupled with the general shift to online in general, I’m not sure a kids’ channel would do that well, if it was to be launched.
I think S4C are focusing more on trying to grow their profile nationally and do more drama co-productions. One’s already been sold to Netflix, and I imagine the partnership with Ryan Reynolds’ FAST TV service in the US will do some good as well.
