And you're quite right -- Pacific Quay has looked rather splendid tonight.

But as one would expect from BBC News these days, there was of course a f**k-up with the lower-thirds after the by-election result was finally announced.

BBC NEWS BREAKING...?

BBC News... broken.

It’s because the lower thirds came from Scotland who have the older version of the lower thirds and I guess the person at NBH was asleep at the wheel, who knows with the news channel these days.

BTW what wrongs with studio c?

Is the 15:00 hour a UK opt out with multiple stories, otherwise Rutherglen by-election, Holly and Wilko will go down well overseas? Or are we rolling back further?

The second half of that article is far more interesting then the first.

This 15:00 hour is a U.K. opt out. I’ve noticed 14:00-16:00 as well as some mornings have been an opt out a lot this week, presumably though this is down to the party conference speeches and by election results coverage.

The Nicky Campbell part we already know about, the presenters part at least we now know the end may actually be in sight this time.

Arguably, like this morning, there are some mornings when the phone-in should be dropped altogether. To spend an hour broadcasting a phone-in debating whether children should brush their teeth in school, on the morning of a significant by-election result, with no acknowledgement of that result at all apart from in the short news summaries, is editorially questionable on a supposedly 24 hour news channel.
You'd hope that in two weeks time on the morning after the result of the next two English by-elections, a full morning UK opt from 9am will be planned.

The second half of the article talks about the channel losing viewers. This morning, people tuning in between 9-10am expecting some coverage of the result, but instead finding a debate about "Toothbrushes in the classroom" will have channel hopped elsewhere and likely not gone back later on.

This is of course without even going into the debate about whether it was suitable for international audiences on the combined channel to get in depth coverage of the result after 11am.

Let's hope that those 5 female presenters are back on air this autumn to bring some professionalism back to the channel alongside the 4 remaining chief presenters.

This must be the most effective use of the tower screen to date. It’s almost as if they built a little Wilkos in the corner!
