The Sport Thread - For stuff not worthy of a thread of its own

That new format really doesn't get better every time you overview it. Awful on so many levels.

That looks based on the current branding. But this will be third rights cycle for this branding and graphics, so I would be very surprised if things do stay the same.

That Europa League logo seems to be so close to the old that it’s change for the sake of change.

I hope they don’t change the music, they’ve been through three themes in 15 years already while the Champions League music is 30 years old (and based on a piece nearly 300 years old!) and iconic. While I was never quite sure why they dropped the original Europa League music, the clapping theme they replaced it with was awful, so having replaced that in turn with something half decent (if hardly iconic) I’d hope they stick with it.

I think the top of the Europa League trophy is octagonal - I guess hinting at it in the logo gives it a bit of differentiation from the Conference League logo..

Yeah, that is the story behind the current branding, with angular 'energy waves' for the UEL based on the UEFA Cup, and the new UECL branding and trophy building on that with curved 'energy waves'. So the new UEL logo is aligning closer with the branding by the looks of it.

My work recently had a session with MassiveMusic who composed the Europa League Anthem. It's not going anywhere for a while yet.

Widely reported tonight the BBC have won the FTA rights for the FA Cup following the TNT deal, with a four year deal to show two live matches each round, one semi final and the final along with highlights in Match of the Day.

A terrible deal for Free to air, to only have on Semi final, 2 quarter finals and most likely small matches. If the same deal was in place this year we would say goodbye to Manchester United V Liverpool and Manchester City V Newcastle. FTA would be left with the scraps like Wolves V Coventry and Chelsea V Leicester. Angry

The number of matches on FTA is very similar to what was shown before 2021 in previous deals with BT Sport, ESPN, ITV and the BBC. The Daily Mail article makes no mention of what quality picks the BBC will receive, it is easily plausible that the FA has insisted that the FTA partner will have access to first (or second) picks like they did in the previous agreements, so it appears to be speculation to say a Manchester United v. Liverpool game would not be shown on the BBC in future. We'll have to wait to either when the deal is officialy announced or possibly until the deal comes into effect to see what picks the BBC will have be able to show.

It is worth noting that the BBC have cut another FTA deal with Warner Bros Discovery in the not too recent past that allowed them free reign to show whatever they want on their limited number of streams, whilst other countries had other restrctions on what could be shown. There is a point there that the BBC once again is propping up a grab by WBD to take a premium sport contract off FTA TV.

Do you really think TNT would be so lovely and buy these FA cup rights just to end up with third and fourth pick matches. They are a greedy company. I am 99% Certain that BBC will end up with the scraps. Lets just hope they haven't paid millions to TNT because I bet TNT would then use that money for Six Nations rights. If they were that nice they would have given BBC all Quarter finals and both Semi finals.

More news about the Irish rights for the UEFA Champions League, Europa League & Conference League rights.

Saran Media International, who are the owners of Livescore, have signed a new contract with UEFA to stream matches to these competitions from 2024 to 2027.

We still haven't heard anything whether RTÉ have gained something for the UCL from these new rights deals.

The same should be said for VMTV on the UEFA Europa League & Conference League in the near future.
