Expect lots on tonight’s Six One and Nine, and wouldn’t be surprised if a Prime Time is added to the schedule.

Indeed here is RTÉ One breaking away for a newsflash

There is indeed an extra Prime Time scheduled tonight for 9.40 pm on RTÉ 1 after an extended Nine News.

Let me guess, Virgin Media One offered no extra news, just their regular bulletins?

Yep, Virgin Media offered no extra news and didn’t broadcast the announcement live. Colette Fitzpatrick did do an OB outside Leinster House for the 5.30 and 7 bulletins.

The Tonight Show has just finished talking about Leo Varadkar's announcement on Virgin Media One.

It had a total of eight panellists, including 3 TD's, in studio to talk about his resignation today.

Ciara Doherty was the presenter in studio. Claire Brock was outside Leinster House in Dublin.

When is the next Irish general election due? Also, isn't there a Presidential election due in a year or so?

The next general election is due by around this time next year. There are council and European elections in early June this year. The next presidential election, if contested, would be in October 2025.

It is not known yet when there will be an Irish general election. There's a lot of talk maybe within the Irish media or Irish political circles at the moment that the current 3 party government in Dublin would stay on for another year to let them see out their 5 year term in Government.

There is also quite a bit of work to do about who is going to take part in the Fine Gael leadership contest as well.

There's about 5 candidates in the mix for this upcoming FG leadership vote.

Simon Harris could be the big favourite to take on the job of Taoiseach. Although he has not formally announced his intention to run in this contest yet.

Other names popping up in the mix are Paschal Donohue, Heather Humphreys, Helen McEntee and Peter Burke.

None of these candidates have reported their intention to formally begin a campaign to run in the contest for Taoiseach either.

From a TV presentation point of view; the live news bulletin/news special coverage from the main PSBs in Ireland could show the results of that party leadership vote live maybe from somewhere in Dublin City Centre on either the 8th/9th of April. The last FG leadership vote was held in The Mansion House in 2018.

Going by mathematics, the last Irish election was in February 2020 (before the world changed with Covid) and so there must be an election to be held by Feb/March 2025, so less than a year left, but on average how many Irish governments actually run out their full term in office?

It looks like we are in for an autumn election here in the UK, it would be very interesting, if there was an Irish general election too at the same time, along with the US election.

George Lee has written up a very emotional reflection about his late colleague Charlie Bird.

The video clip of George Lee talking about Charlie Bird on the Today Show is very emotional.

I hope Charlie is at peace now from that horrible scourge of a disease. Rest well Charlie; you legend.
