If this is true it would be criminal from Sky, government intervention would have to be needed here

Can’t read the full article as it’s behind a paywall, but what I can see says nothing about Sky. So what point are you making?

There is a bit in the article saying this

Meanwhile, Sky Sports will seek to resist any pressure to allow Saturday’s final to be shown on free-to-air TV, should England get there.

When England reached the previous T20 World Cup final in 2022, Sky — the exclusive UK TV rights holder for the tournament — did a deal with Channel 4 to show the game as well. It had also done so for the 50-over World Cup final in 2019, which attracted a peak audience of 8.7million when England beat New Zealand at Lord’s.

It is understood that Sky has no plans at the moment to share the rights for the final, though the broadcaster will additionally put the match on its Sky Showcase channel, which does not require a Sky Sports subscription.

Sources say the company has to balance ensuring its subscribers receive value for money with possible calls to make the game available to free-to-air TV. Sky also needs a return on its investment in what has been a somewhat disjointed tournament played at three venues in the United States and six in the Caribbean.

A significant financial offer would be needed to tempt Sky while Channel 4 appears to be focusing its resources elsewhere, including covering the Paralympics in Paris this summer.

The knockout rounds of Euro 2024 are also taking place this weekend. England will be playing their round-of-16 game, with the tournament all being screened on free-to-air TV by the BBC and ITV.

Furthermore, no broadcaster bid to screen last weekend’s rugby union international between England and Japan, which ended up on the online streaming platform RugbyPass.

In the past politicians have put pressure on Sky to share the rights to cricket finals, but given that parliament is still dissolved before the general election on July 4 those demands are likely to be dialled down. Sky could also point out that all homes with broadband can access the final via a daily subscription on the streaming platform Now.

There has been a new format for rugby league's Challenge Cup announced. Whilst Super League clubs previously joined in the sixth round, they will now enter in third round and will be seeded to be away from home in that round. The third round will take place in February and then there is basically a round each month, culminating in the finals at Wembley on June 7th in 2025.

Hopefully, the BBC's (or possibly another broadcaster) linear coverage starts in the third round. It was a bit farcical that the linear coverage started so late into the competition this year, after the Super League clubs had entered. The fact that Super League sides will be away from home in this round will allow them to build a FA Cup-style vibe to this round of the competition. If the BBC gets their ducks in order, they could have consistent and frequent live rugby league between the elongated Challenge Cup campaign and their Super League rights, which have been a bit underutilised this year, possibly because of the short time between the deal being struck and the season starting. They will have the benefit of all future matches not being on linear Sky Sports, only Sky Sports+. They will be having a good run in at the end of the current season by the looks of it.

Can predict your argument here without seeing the link but frankly World Cup Cricket tournaments are now so frequent they're increasingly worthless. This tournament has completely passed people by, and not just because it's on Sky. It's been structured in a way that for the biggest nations at least the big games were few and far between until the latter stages.

Frankly when it comes to cricket the only conversation to be had when it comes to protecting events for free to air broadcast is in relation to The Ashes. Anything else is just a token gesture largely designed to keep The Ashes behind a paywall.

How can you predict my argument? If England get to the T20 world cup final it would be terrible that it was not available free to view in some way, they are not worthless, it may actually be the one thing a England team win this year

Some MMA action coming up on S4C this weekend - with Swansea’s Brett Johns taking on Tyler Diamond in the PFL.

It’ll be streamed live at 11pm before a linear replay on Saturday at 9pm.

All four of Scotland's summer tour fixtures in the Americas will be live on TNT Sports, with the Chile and Uruguay matches also live on the BBC Scotland channel.

Bit of a random pick-up for TNT Sports as they aren't showing any other rugby at this time of year, and these matches late at night won't bring in too many extra subscribers.

One assumes the price was right for them.

BT have shown Scotland games before, usually on a non-exclusive basis. They've been a major sponsor of Scottish rugby in recent years so may have some kind of broadcasting option in relation to that.
