International News Presentation: Past and Present

Very sad indeed. Used to watch Het Journaal quite a bit when BVN (a Dutch version of TV5) used to simulcast VRT’s 1pm & 7pm news and Martine was very much their figurehead.

A very cool, calm and reassuring presence on air.

Fortuitously, the latter part of one of her first bulletins from May 1978 exists - don’t know if it’s still the case now but potential journalists had to pass an intensive exam as part of the application process to join (what was) the BRT.

Her last ever Journaal (30.11.2020) was extended to pay this tribute - just over two million viewers tuned in, the most watched news programme in VRT’s history.

Sunrise's new set and graphics are quite NBC Today-ish... but it looks okay. Looks a little tight on wide shots though.

Meanwhile at TVNZ... Seriously? Black lower thirds for Breakfast? This is a joke. As if they were doing a funeral or a spiritual tribute to someone with pink/orange-coloured studio backdrops and black lower thirds.... They should seriously revert to having different colour bugs for different programmes. But overall, I think the animation worked well and they will need a bit of a tweak for correspondent/guest names and the live bug. Sometimes they just got blended into the pictures and it's hard to read. Even though they've tried a black shadow for the names, it's too light to handle that much white.

(I really liked the 2022 TVNZ Breakfast background that they had, it showed NZ's cultural feature but yet looking fresh. The refreshed 2023 ones just feel disconnected to the previous set of graphics and even more so now.)

Martine was Het Journaal. It's difficult to overstate just how famous and respected she was in Flanders. The closest equivalent in the UK would probably be Trevor McDonald.

The journalist's exam was abolished at some point in the 90s. I'm quite sure Martine's successor as head anchor, Wim De Vilder, was part of the very last cohort who took it.

It wasn't just Sunrise that got a new look, but The Morning Show too!

Also a look at 1 News Midday and Te Karere with the new graphics.

The Morning Show also rebranded as well, now more closely resembling their neighbours. Here's the graphics reels of both TMS and Sunrise, discovered by Media Spy (forums.mediaspy.org ):

Seems like the montage a few posts prior is made private, so here's some shots over the new studio.

Looks pretty refreshing, especially for TMS - not too sure on the blue-on-orange combination though.

Over in Taiwan, public broadcaster PTS updated their titles in early July, making their Chinese wordmarks sit upright while having a rethink at the parallelogram theme.

Before: youtu.be

After (flagship Evening News): youtu.be

The rest of their newscasts (Lunchtime News in native Taiwanese; Indonesian, Thai News bulletins; and The World Today) followed the same style as the Evening News, except for Morning News where they'd use orange instead. The World Today's studio was especially sci-fi, and surprisingly over-the-top considering PTS' public broadcaster status:

Dank dat je bij ons was ("Thanks for being with us", her catch phrase at the end of Het Journaal)

She was acclaimed for her way of speaking Dutch, she presented Het Groot Dictee der Nederlandse Taal (a spelling contest) with her Dutch counterpart Philip Freriks (NOS Journaal). Here, you can find the edition of 2014, her final edition: www.npostart.nl

Worth taking a look at these.

A quite excellent fansite (just recently redesigned) called 'Homo Journaliius' going into detail about the numerous decors, graphics and anchors of VRT's news over the decades - be it the austere 'envelope' look of the mid 80s, the bright yet simple Lambie Nairn titles of the 90s or the minimalist graphics from 2008.

www.homojournalius.be

And even beyond that, there's lots of behind-the-scenes videos from a Journaal 'superfan' - documenting numerous relaunches, title designs, set construction etc.
