French TV - News Discussion

Week 2 of the Franceinfo holiday period sees more normal presenters back in their slots. Flore Maréchal was back on afternoons (with Martin Baumer off this week), Sonia Chironi on 19/20 info and Alexandra Uzan on 23h info.

On the maintale show, the only normal person on the show was culture columnist Alix Dauge with stand-ins throughout.

Jockeys from last week are still on the other shows including Matthieu Belliard, Jeanne Baron and Pauline Forgue.

TVMag write-up about Ruquier's disappointing ratings. Once again, on Monday, he was behind LCI. What's more interesting though in my opinion is that BFMTV has reportedly approached Brunet to come over from BFMTV to present at the same timeslot he does today! Given that BFMTV seems incapable of retaking leadership on the 22/00 slot, perhaps hiring Brunet who has the leadership is the only way for them to retake the top of the podium!

If I recall, the whole reason why Ruquier was hired in the first place is because the current head of the channel is his friend?

Personally I'd be happier with two hours of Julie Hammett on her own than this mess of hiring a celebrity presenter who doesn't have the journalistic credentials.

Still it's better than GB News hiring Peter Andre to read autocue.

Changes from Jan 2024 on BFMTV:
Maxime Switek for the 9/12 (takes over from Bruce Toussaint -- current 22/00 weekday presenter)
Alice Darfeuille for the 20/22, alongside Ruquier for the 20/21 (takes over from Julie Hammett -- currently 22/00 weekends)
Julie Hammett for the 22/00 (takes over from Maxime Switek -- currently 20/22 weekdays)
Céline Pitelet for the 22/00 on weekends (takes over from Alice Darfeuille -- currently presents the 13h Sunday factchecking show) -- a return to WE Direct for her! She presented the show before Alice Darfeuille.

So it appears they've finally realised the Ruquier/Hammett pairing isn't working, so instead of getting rid of the problem, they're shuffling other presenters instead.

However I don't believe that Julie Hammett is the problem at all.

In my view, it doesn't have to do with Ruquier at all: BFMTV reportedly approached Brunet for the 22/00 in a bid to beat Brunet over on LCI, so in the absence of him accepting, they found the closest they'd got: Julie Hammett, Brunet's ex-co-host, to host the slot Big Grin .

Franceinfo largely returned to normal today with the exception of Planéte info where Pauline Forgue is still covering for Lucie Chaumette with Marine Mulcey covering for Forgue in her normal role.

However the steady cam was back for that bulletin today.

A further update on Ruquier and it's not going well ratings-wise

Thursday 9 November (20:05-20:55)
CNEWS - L'Heure des Pros 2 - 895k (4.2%)
LCI - Un oeil sur le monde - 252k (1.2%)
BFMTV - 20h Ruquier (19:59-21:05) - 132k (0.6%)
franceinfo - Les informés - 81k (0.4%)

Overall, BFMTV was also behind CNEWS on Wednesday and Thursday (3.1% vs. 3.0% and 3.2% vs 2.9% respectively).

Bruce Toussaint's new breakfast show confirmed to launch on the 8th of January 2024.

Other non-news related items launching on that same day on TF1 include the new TF1+ streaming platform (which will supersede MyTF1) and the relaunch of Plus Belle la Vie.

BFMTV seems worried about TF1’s upcoming breakfast show. Worth noting that historically they haven’t been big fans of allowing competition, for instance trying very hard to block LCI’s move to from paid to free TNT.
