French TV - News Discussion

BFMTV has always been strong when they're providing rolling news. I know sticking talking heads around a desk is cheaper than journalism, but CNEWS (GB News France) and LCI do it a lot better, same for the radio talking head simulcasts on Franceinfo.

Hiring Ruquier was another joke. While he's an accomplished broadcaster, he's not a journalist.

One of the telling points of how little news reporting is actually being done is when I think it was Philippe Corbe (head of the redaction at BFMTV) saying how they had 1.5 hours a day of reporting. Probably a far cry from a few years ago.

After the announcement of Bonjour !, TF1 news and sports director Thierry Thuillier has been interviewed (again) by Le Parisien’s Benoît Daragon. In this paywalled interview, he told the following tidbits:

- The show’s name is an homage to Bonjour la France, TF1’s first foray into morning TV back in the 80s
- As previously told, the new show will focus on “vie quotidienne” issues (culture, lifestyle, health…) and compete mostly with Télématin
- The new show won’t compete, but compliment LCI’s Le 6/9; Jean-Baptiste Boursier and his team have been also advised on the programme’s pre-production status, and, as expected, won’t overlap too much in content (with LCI’s retaining its focus on politics, business and geopolitical issues, as with most of the network’s schedule), and Thuillier has confirmed a pilot recording was made last week
- Bonjour ! will take a cue of Le 13h and will also feature more regional and patrimonial content, using TF1’s network of regional partners, with around 20 staff members in and outside Paris working for the show
- Thuiller says he wants to boost the audiences of both shows; in the case of Bonjour !, he expects not to beat Télématin and Première édition from the start, but rather to make TF1 a third-place and/or podium finisher in the morning ratings race (as already told, TF1 is even behind CNews’ morning show and RMC Story’s simulcast of Apolline Matin).
- Initial plans called to start the show at 6h30, but TF1’s children’s TV obligations led to the show starting at 7h; TFOU will continue to air from an hour on weekdays on the main network, with the rest of the schedule switching to TFX and extending the main network's weekend schedule of cartoons (reports also previously rumoured); as for the other existing morning programme, Téléshopping, it will now air after Bonjour !, but more programming changes are expected when the contract with the Stars group, which produces and distributes the show, ends at the conclusion of 2025, with TF1 not renewing it

- Christophe Beaugrand, will apparently be leaving LCI, he will have a "regard décalé" on a topic of his choice
- Hélène Mannarino with a "portrait inattendu"
- Karima Charni for culture
- Garance Pardigon for the news bulletins
- Ange Noiret, unsurprisingly, for the weather
- Jean-Marie Bagayoko, for viewers' questions
- Maud Descamps, as previously revealed, for la "vie quotidienne"
- Vincent Valinducq as the show's doctor (with Anaïs Grangerac taking over once a week)
- Benjamin Muller, for parenthood and nutrition
- Monique Younès, role not revealed, but she did culture on RTL previously
- Adrien Gindre, with LCI's political interview moving to TF1

- Stefan Etcheverry, who used to host LCI's breakfast show between 2021 and 2023, is joining for a 'fil rouge' report on the show where he will be on location and tell the story of a place, a village or a monument. He was the sports chroniqueur when Toussaint used to host #TeamToussaint on itele back in the day!
- Laurent Mariotte will be there once a week for a cooking chronique
- Julien Arnaud (not the one who's a joker on TF1!), the TF1/LCI politics reporter, will have something about heritage and history, once a week once again.
- Julie Tomeï for tourism, journeys, 'escapism' (no clue how to best translate evasion into English -- just one of those words!) once a week too.

First look at Bonjour !'s studio set, which according to Thierry Thuillier's remarks during the press launch, it was designed and built in just three months, and will have a live panoramic view of Paris. The set really looks like a mishmash of Télématin with the flair of TF1's news studio designs (and more specifically LCI's previous set):

The first desk reminds me of the original London Live wooden desk when they were based in Kensington.
