The BBC and ITV have announced the TV schedules for coverage of the upcoming Women's World Cup that is being held in Australia and New Zealand in less than a month

The BBC have got the opening game and both semi-finals, with the final as usual being broadcast by both them and ITV

No word yet on what the presenting line-up will be for either broadcaster.

Adele Roberts is leaving Radio 1 after "an incredible eight years" at the station.

The DJ has already presented her last show, which was in May.

In the last few years she's spoken openly about her treatment for bowel cancer and in June last year she said she was free from the disease.

After two decades, the BBC will no longer provide extra Wimbledon Red Button feeds via satellite. Bonus coverage will be available via the iPlayer instead.

Traditionally, the BBC offered up to six temporary pop-up channels for the summer, offering extra coverage from the grass courts of SW19. Prior to the pandemic, these channels also offered coverage from Glastonbury.

The online shift means that satellite viewers using older receivers will find they can’t access the same range of extra Wimbledon feeds as before. On newer receivers, the extra coverage will be delivered via the internet.

The newly updated This Morning titles, now featuring more donut, got me thinking about television title sequences featuring Television Centre.

www.youtube.com

Of course the absolute classic is Live & Kicking:
www.youtube.com

Back in the TVC days Children in Need almost always opened with a bit of a light show outside TVC:

I've vague recollections too of a Lottery version with the balls coming through the walls of Studio 1, but I might have imagined that as I can't find anything along those lines.

Anyone think of any more where TVC actually plays an active role in the titles, rather than just acting as an establishing shot?

We've known for some time that MasterChef will be leaving its current home at Three Mills in London, and moving to a new dedicated home at the former Banana Warehouse in Digbeth, Birmingham. Obviously, the show will look quite different when it relocates in 2024, if for no other reason than it will be coming from completely new studios -- but I suspect an update is also coming to the presentational elements of the programme (branding, titles, in-show graphics, etc).

I stumbled across a BBC News article today, published in January, which has a visualisation of what the new studios might look like:

I was immediately struck by two things: First, the use of the global MasterChef wordmark, rather than the horrid -- and very mid-Noughties -- typeface currently used on the UK show, as shown below...

...and second, how similar the new studio visualisation appears to international variants of the show, such as MasterChef USA and MasterChef Australia, e.g.:

The BBC series has stubbornly resisted switching to the global MasterChef branding for years, which has always confused me -- given that the Beeb doesn't own the MasterChef format, I'm surprised the UK version has been able to continue doing its own thing in terms of both design and format for so long.

Perhaps the move to Digbeth is being seen as the perfect opportunity to finally align the show's design with that of its international counterparts? And if that's the case, we'll surely see new or updated titles, and perhaps a new design for captions (e.g. name, hometown, etc). And if there is to be an alignment of branding, I wonder if the format of the UK show might also be tweaked to reflect the more competitive style of the international shows (e.g. all contestants in every show from the very beginning, rather than multiple heats with small groups of contestants at a time; more group challenges; earning 'advantages' and 'immunity' from being sent home, etc).

Now, a quick, but much-needed, splash of cold water.

I do of course realise that the image that started off this rambling post is just an 'artist's impression' by Stanhope, the firm managing the design and construction works, and I've seen enough artist's impressions to know that agencies often get details (even quite big and obvious ones!) wrong in their visualisations -- so it's entirely possible that all of this is based on nothing more than a mistake by the artists...

...but I do think introducing a new/updated look at the same time as relocating to the new studios makes sense, so I'm inclined to believe (perhaps foolishly!) that it's not a mistake, and that it might just happen.

And frankly, the current titles are older than Fanny Cradock, so it's about time! 😄

Oscar-winning actress and former MP Glenda Jackson has died at the age of 87, her agent has said.
In a statement, Lionel Larner{her agent)  said: "Glenda Jackson, two-time Academy Award-winning actress and politician, died peacefully at her home in Blackheath, London this morning after a brief illness with her family at her side.

"She recently completed filming The Great Escaper in which she co-starred with Michael Caine."

Her acting career dates back to the 1950s, she was a veteran of the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1960s and in the 1970s she appeared extensively on The Morecambe & Wise Show, and according to IMDb even appeared in an episode of T-Bag in the 1990 Christmas special.  Glenda Jackson's appearances on Morecambe & Wise is said to have boosted her acting career and profile - her debut appearance as Cleopatra ("all men are fools and what makes them so is having beauty like what I have got") made Hollywood take note (it says here)

By the 1990s she had jacked acting in to go and sit in the House of Commons, where she remained until 2015, before returning to acting.

Here's a brief low quality snippet of Jackson's first appearance on Morecambe & Wise in 1971 (think it was from the Christmas Special that year?) where she played Cleopatra:

Here's Jackson is in a Public Information film alongside Ernie Wise in 1981:

Since shortly before 0630, large parts of Nottingham city centre have been closed due to "ongoing major police incidents":

twitter.com

Nottinghamshire Police itself confirmed an "ongoing serious incident" just before 0800.

twitter.com

As far I could see, there was no mention of this on any of the major UK news outlets until some time later. GMB broke the news at 0824:

twitter.com

I believe Sky broke the news at 0830, referring to the Notts Police tweet on air:

At the same time as that was going out on GMB, BBC News stuck with a seemingly interminable three-minute promo for Morning Live, before going to local news. Breakfast finally broke the news after returning at the 0830 BOTH.

Note the welcome reappearance of the double-line lower-thirds for breaking news, with scrolling/flipping additional info.

BBC News article also available here: www.bbc.co.uk

What seems remarkable is that we're now well over two hours into a major incident that has effectively shut down a UK city centre... and still no-one seems to have the slightest idea what's going on.

And with nothing else to report apart from "there's an incident", broadcasters have (understandably!) returned to coverage of other stories, rather than sticking with rolling coverage of the Nottingham situation.

The BBC announces its coverage for Wimbledon.

A surprise to nobody, Clare Balding takes over from Sue Barker as lead host. Isa Guha will continue to present the start of each day's play.

Today at Wimbledon has survived the axe, despite reports to the contrary, and has a new timeslot of 9PM and a new host in Qasa Alom. I believe this will be Alom's debut as a BBC Sport presenter, though he has reported from last year's Commonwealth Games and more. Let's hope the programme actually gets broadcast at all this year.

This also means coverage is now on BBC One until the later time of 9PM.

The only new name I see in the commentary teams is doubles legend Sania Mirza; I can't see any notable absentees but someone might have escaped my mind. Boris Becker unsurprisingly does not return after his time in prison and subsequent deportation. Andrew Cotter is listed second, behind Andrew Castle and ahead of Sam Smith, so would be my favourite to cover the Women's Singles final. Andy Stevenson will replace Clare Balding as the wheelchair singles finals host on the mornings of finals weekend.
