I think this usually has its own thread, so tomorrow is the annual BBC Sports Personality of the Year broadcast on BBC One. It will be hosted be Gabby Logan, Alex Scott, Gary Lineker and Clare Balding from MediaCity UK, Salford. It will be originally in a two hour slot, which is 15 minutes less than last year, but it will probably overrun anyway.

It is rather unusal for the programme to be aired on a Tuesday. It is only the second time I can remember it not airing on a Sunday, after last year which was moved due to the FIFA World Cup final taking place the last Sunday before Christmas. I doubt I'm alone in not giving it my full attention tomorrow due to it clashing with the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, a problem that would likely not arise on Sunday evenings with so little domestic sport on Sunday evenings. It will be interesting to see how this affects ratings and wider interest.

The nominees for the main award are:
- Cricketer Stuart Broad
- Jockey Frankie Dettori
- Footballer Mary Earps
- Wheelchair tennis player Alfie Hewett
- Athlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson
- Golfer Rory McIlroy

As ever there is discourse and critisicm of the shortlist, and specifically who has been omitted. One of the more vocal complaints that I have come across is the abscence of world 1500m champion Josh Kerr, despite Jake Wightman nominated for the exact same achievment last year. This type of list is always going to be subjective and omit some strong candidates, but I can't see why the shortlist is not bigger at around ten names.

After 53 years on air, Question of Sport has been axed/rested by the BBC.

To be honest, this doesn't come as a surprise. They tried the revamp a few years ago, and though personally I don't think it necessarily made the show worse, it hardly was a big enough revolution to reignite the show's fortunes.

TV Presentation forum staple now in its fifth year!

Place your bets please, what are we going to predict will happen next year? From my post last year - "The TV Predictions are only a bit of fun, they're almost always going to be wrong to a large extent. Don't think we need to be debunking them unless they were totally ridiculous in the first place and/or were never going to happen without the help of a flux capacitor to alter the timeline... "

For reference, here's the 2023 Thread:

For further reference, here's the 2022 Thread on the purple place:

And from the blue place, here's the 2021 thread, which has links to previous predictions for 2020 and earlier:

My TVS prediction from last year didn't happen (but then it was a silly one and was never going to happen), neither did anything else of what I predicted.

For 2024, I predict:

Sky and many mobile providers hide their price rises within the RPI small print and Ofcom’s proposal is in my opinion is the right approach.

But I must ask the question, what’s the point of a contract that goes up during the term? I see much less of an appeal. Be interesting to see how the worst culprits, like Sky play this with their marketing.

A consultation has gone out on changes to C4, including cuts to original programming, current affairs programming and what remains of their schools programming obligation (30 minutes a year apparently).

News wise though they want to axe the lunchtime summary, a relic of the long axed News at Noon.  I can't recall if they had a bulletin before that - think it might just have been as part of their lunchtime political shows.  And up until 2003 they'd had News as part of their breakfast output too.

More controversially and opposed by OFCOM is a desire to cut their weekend News commitments.   C4 are the only channel to offer half hour bulletins most weekends.  The Saturday bulletin began in 1999 and the Sunday edition followed a few years later (there was a period where C4 offered a full Saturday bulletin and C5 a full Sunday bulletin).  Prior to that it was just a 5 minute summary.

It really would be a loss to lose news completely from C4 and I doubt that is the genuine aim - if they can reduce to 15 minutes as BBC1/ITV have that might be the compromise.   C4 state they wouldn't axe lunchtime bulletins immediately or weekend bulletins, but want the flexibility to make changes in the future.

I thought I missed it. But I noticed no one has been talking about the new BBC News Website and the reason is because its only being seen in North America. Its been completely redesigned. ITs been updated for a few months now. The big red bar is gone its more white space and the navigation is in the centre at the top of the page and much smaller. Also it seems like their is less imagery. But maybe that was at the beginning when it was launched.
I didnt realise the UK forumers havent seen it until I looked via my VPN that you all stil have the old BBC News Website. It seems they start with the US first.I guess it will be rolled out to the UK soon. Sorry I dont have any screen shots.

here is an article about it from

It's being speculated today that the government will roll back on it's promise that the license fee will rise with inflation from next year, a promise made after the BBC agreed a 2 year license fee freeze in January 2022. Ministers are also openly talking about ending the license fee after 2027 (if they won the next GE, which thankfully is looking highly unlikely)

So what is left to cut? Aside from Panorama, all of the BBC's political & current affairs programs have been reduced to interview & opinionated discussion, the UK News Channel has been reduced to an opt out of the international channel, sports coverage is greatly reduced on what it once was, BBC 4 is already a repeats channel and will close completely within 2 years, CBBC will be on iPlayer only within 2 years.........

Further channel cuts......BBC 3 going back to iPlayer only, 5 Live closed down? Reduced or no sports coverage on the BBC?
BBC 2 closed down?

I think it's pretty obvious the current government has an ideological opposition to the very existence of the BBC.

They usually get missed by many, but S4C's Christmas Presentation has launched today, though I couldn't spot a press release to go with it on the English site this year and instead it's just their programme highlights release. They have a bit of a habit at S4C of switching between live action idents one year and animated the next, though it's generally always been something fresh and not recycled. However this time round it looks like even they may have gone and followed the trend by dusting off something from an old S4C look a decade ago with some minor updates. But it's still back on the animated sequences.

Just a few examples so far:-

Ive always wondered Why did some areas get proper titles made for thier regional news segments within 60mins while other just use the 5 second sting?

Spotlight got one, infact they kept the titles and music after 60mins was dropped
